Solid stock, and make sure you have everything balanced out BEFORE mounting either of them.

Here's some pics, one I did this past year.
The mount complete

The Base Cedar Stump

The bottom deer off, with the stump showing the square stock as Matt stated. This will be the "male" stock

The bottom Deer, I drilled out the form and put the larger of the stock, the "female" end, in the form and bondoed it tight into the form. It goes from the bottom to the top of the form, so that it accepts the male end in the cedar stump and the male end in the top deer. Both male ends, the one in the stump and the one in the top deer, are cut so that they are halfway into the bottom deer.
The top of the bottom deer.

The top deer with the male end installed. It is also bondoed into the form, as is the stock into the stump.

You have to take your time, start at the bottom and work your way up, and take your time! The big thing to watch is the "tilt" of the deer when together, and also to make sure they are not leaning to either side. Good Luck!

Quick question on this, do any of you either paint the stock or use aluminum to avoid the potential of rust discolor ing the hair. Or is rusting of the steel not an issue?

I have not, I think it shouldn't be an issue, however maybe in humid areas it will. Painting the stock before installing would not be a problem, for how much time it would take it is probably worth it to do.

Just finished putting this one together today actually. Bottom one is already finished with foaming and backing. Female end is in the bottom deer and the male end is welded to a plate for extra stability then bent and twisted to get the angle position I want on the top deer. I then bolt the rods to the back panels and foam and finish the backing.

If you are attaching them straight on top of eachother so the pressure is all downward you only need straight rods without plates and is super simple.

May I ask where you buy the stock materials from? I have yet to mount a pedestal with the metal stock.

Home Depot or Lowes, even some mom and pop hardware stores here sell them.

It is better to get them from a metal shop, the ones from lowes or homedepot have to much play when you slide one into the other.
