Whitetails are great, but I tend to get tired of the same old thing.

I have an interest in small deer species.   Brocket Deer, Roe Deer, Hog Deer and others.

We see a bit on here about Roe Deer.

What about Brocket, Hog, Muntjac, or other small, obscure species?  Are they hunted and mounted?  Do they often show up in US collections?  Some forms are on the market, but obscure species must be challenges to the taxidermist.  Getting the skins to the US, etc must be challenges also.

How about some photos of animals (live, fresh kills or mounts) and stories of the hunt and or the taxidermy involved.

Where I live in Sth Eastern Australia, we have wild hog deer right on our doorstep. They are my favorite deer to hunt, very challenging, and near nocturnal in the month long season we have.

They were introduced to Australia(all our deer are Exotic) around 120 years ago, and have a limited range in coastal victoria. They are managed by the local dnr, and we can take one stag(male) and one hind(female) per season, which runs the 30 days of april.

A good male will have antlers at least 16" long, measured on the outside curve of the antler. He should weigh around 40kg, or 85 pounds

Those hog deer are neat!  Small, stocky built, and with some pretty variable antlers.

They seem well haired and make pretty little mounts.  I would love to see them hung with Roe, Whitetail, Mule, Fallow, Sika, Axis, etc.

Do you do your own tanning or have factory tan facilities down there?  Commecial forms?  Bondo the ears or use earliners?  Suppliers?

Yes, we have commercial tanning, although some in house is done too. I'm a bondo man, but ear liners are also common here
The main taxidermy supply is through Australian Taxidermy Supplies, they have a great range of manikens
Glad you liked them, they are great little deer

They are quite funny looking to me!  Probably because the only deer I see are white tails.  Neat to see some of the different species out there.

Samantha those live shots are neat.  I would never want to set deer eyes that deep but hey on a Hog deer it would be just right!

The power of reference!

Cam/Starchild,

I looked at Australia Taxidermy Supply's web site.

http://www.australiantaxidermysupplies.com.au/

Neat to see what is available to you and to see the terminology used (I saw shoulder forms refered to as "chest" forms).

Neat to see that a good variety of big game is available there (although much is introduced) and certainly Australian hunters travel to other continents and ship hides/horns back.

Cool stuff.
