I am doing my first whitetail for the masters division. I did not have time to do an open mouth but other than that, any comments? Form is a matuska 174 altered to have the head up and looking up.

X2. It looks fantastic! Just a question, since I'm still a newb. How do you get the cape on with the ears already in place? When I did mine I had the ear liners in the ears already, once I got the cape on I used clay for the ear butts. I would have prefered to do it the way you have it, so I could get more detail in the ear butts, and more room to work.

spray the area that your ear go with spray adhesive, then stick down plastic wrap. Attach you ears with a pin, screw, or clay. Build your ear butts out of epoxy scalp or clay. If using clay, you will need to brush modge podge on the clay when done so that the clay does not break apart when removing. When I use epoxy scalp, I counted sink a screw that goes through and up into the wood on the top of the form. I can't always get the screw back in when the skin is on, so if I can't I just glue the back on. So remove the ears and antlers when dry. Glue the ears into the skin, pull the skin on the form, remount the antlers and pull the ears back into place. Screw them in if you can pull down on the skin far enough through the antler burr area or just again glue. cover your screw or hole with clay and that it.

Thank you! I'm going to try this on the next mount I do. See if it works better for me than the other way. Thanks again.

I got about half that. You should do a pic tutorial on that ( if not already done) . Guess your using a short y?
I am real interested in this way but guess I don't have the knowledge to put all of what you are saying together yet..
thanks Kevin

The way I do it is real close to his but I use a non hardning clay ( cheap) and then mold my ears the same way, but then put Johnson paste wax over your clay, then fiberglass and resin over that. When hard, just remove from form and ear and but are one piece...... Just my way and good luck on your masters deer, looks great so far!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like to crease in my lids until I set and shape my eyes. Alot of time your cape will have a natural lacrimal crease and I use that everytime. Plus when you tuck your lids, or even shape your eye when doing the lay up method, you are going to distort it alittle.
