I just read something on another post that got me thinking about the ears on deer. The person said that the ears didn't flare back on the tips on a mount so it looked off to him. My question is how many make a point to do that? For every reference pic I have of one like that there is another where it isn't. I haven't competed much so, does a typical judge dock you for not doing it? 3bears

Use photos of live deer, not someones "flair" advice. Make them like what you would see in the live photos. The judge uses photos, he/she will have a big thick book of a thousand deer photos that he will use to point out details to you. If you can find an ear with a flair in it, go for it. But if the judge doesn't have a photo of a flaired ear, then you better make it like his photos.

ok i know what post you are talking about and the writer had a point.  however what he was seeing was the ear was too thick and had an unnatural curve to the ear that more so went down.  the ear should be thin and have a slight bend or "flair" to it.   some people put a noticeable flair to it more so to the tips and that is ok to.   just follow your reff pics and what looks natural to you.
