Whiting large skulls...

In the past I did European mounts on my whitetails by burying the head in a leaf compost pile for about 6 to 8 months. Then I would bleach them out with "bleach" and then rinse and then soak in baking soda and I never had a problem.I did lots of them.
I read in past "form" post that bleach is not good.I have this large alligator head cleaned and ready to be whitened. I was wondering if there is cheap way to do this do to the size, and the fact that it's mine. or should I just use bleach and be careful...?

The best way to whiten a skull is to immerse it in a peroxide solution. I use a salon peroxide mixed with whitening powder and it works great. I leave it in over night. Good luck.

40 volume Peroxide and ultra white, I get mine from Sally's Beauty Salon. Mix it up to a paste and paint it on the entire skull. Wrap it in Tin foil, put in front of a little heater for a hour, they turn out as white as snow. I think I'd degrease it first not sure if the compost pile would degrease very good. A heavy mix of dawn dish soap or Kemol 4 and just simmer it for a while.

30 volume peroxide from sallys is just a little over 10% peroxide which is a little low for doing skulls, look into some bacquacil oxidizer from pool companies, it is a 27% mixture that works very well. also i would heavily degrease that gator skull ive never done one personally but that thing looks like its just caked in grease

30 volume is closer to 9 percent and is plenty strong enough to whiten skulls.
Me thinks you are going to have other problems with that one...show us pics of your progress..

That skull is going to turn orange as soon as the peroxide touches it.
You'll need something to get the stains out too.
