Can I just take some fresh cold water and add baking soda to neutralize my cape instead of putting hide back in the pickle itself and neutralize it there?

Yes if it's the pickle. Some tans are designed to be neutralized with the cape in it

True but they are not designed to be left in the pickle and brought up to a more neutral ph, they are to be brought up in the tan.

This isn't tanned yet,I pickled it shaved it and put it in the pickle for another day, then I have to neutralize it.I just wanted to know if I could just mix up a few gallons of cold water and a couple table spoons of baking soda and put the hide in this instead of putting it back in the pickle.I just didn't want to put it back in the semi dirty water.
           Thanks Ron

Ron it takes at least 72 hours to pickle a hide that is 72 hours minimum. Then you can mix up some neutralizer at 1 oz baking soda to 1 gal of water and leave it in there for 20 to 30 min depending on the thickness of the hide. It sounds like you did not de grease it before the pickle (wich is the best way to do it because the dirt and blood and oil on the hide will bring up the ph in your pickle to fast) so I think you should before you neutralize. This is the way most of us were instructed by the supply houses to use lutan f. I have started using trubond recently and neutralizing in the tan by slowly bringing the ph up to 5 then leaving it for a half hour then drain and oil. I think it works a lot better and would recommend doing it this way, out of the pickle into the tan then bring up the ph.

I rough flesh, salt 2 times which is 48 hours then I rinse off real well with cold water then pickle for 3 days,I shave then pickle one more day. Then I will neutralize for 15 to 20 minutes.

Silverman you'l have a much cleaner pickle if you rehydrate first in salt water with a degreasing agent then go into pickle. Then after pickle neutralize in a seperate container. trappermatt...use the ultimate acid...and the pickle doesn't need much tending so skin can stay in there for an extended time. Besides many folks feel you should salt skin till dry before pickling anyway, I like to, some don't.

I use McKenzie tan and after it is neutralized and tanned I never had a problem with hair slipping, dries in about 10 days after mounting.
