While working on bear (or other) rugs, I often need to flip the already-mounted head upside down on the stretching table to sew holes in the hide, or other small chores.  Sliding the upside-down head around on the table risks damaging the ears.

To eliminate this risk, I made a simple temporary stand from a 2x3 and some upholstery pins.  A few staples from my air stapler and it was ready to go.

I simply press the pins into the midline of the head and flip it over.

When not being used for this purpose, it can be used to temporarily hold bird or small mammal bodies while working on them.

When we stretched rugs our table had a cutout for the head to set into upside down. we then stretched the skin an sewed the holes and pleats. Did the top part of the mouth work while the head was upside down on the table drying.

X2 That created a flatter surface to staple the felt to the head as well removing any wrinkles in the body skin.

I always use the cutout when actually stretching to shape/drying.  I just prefer to sew up all the holes in the re-hydrated hide without having to lean over my stretching table to do so.  Being an old fart with a bad back from my USAF days, I prefer to sit in a nice, comfy drafting chair while sewing  Grin.  I usually mount the head up on a stand, and let that dry before I rehydrate the rest of the hide for repairs/final stretching.  Yeah, it's an extra step, and it's slower but like I said...I'm an old fart  Cheesy.
