Rethinning a tanned hide ???
«

I purchased a couple of wet tanned capes that need to be thinned down more. There is no apparent slipping or anything wrong with the hides other than mishandling & not thinned/split enough. When I thin them, do I need to do anything else to them? or will the treatment still be good?

Thats part of your job!!! Sounds like the hides were handled and tanned fine.

Just shave them down, they will be fine.

You should only have to do a little around the face if anything. I would find a new tannery if I had to shave anywhere else. The tannery I use shaves the face area too and there is little to nothing that I have to do to get them ready for mounting.

Thanks for the replies. These were replacement hides purchased from an individual already tanned. They appear to be rough fleshed only, but I don't see any hair slipping.
