i have tried it on several birds and it seems like the neck and head area get greasy looking during the mounting process. I wash with soap and water very good so i didn't know if it was from the gas i soak the skin in or if it was from the softener.

I've had better results using fabric softener after dawn than just using dawn.

I use Downy fabric softener after washing with dawn with excellent results.   Birds smell good too!  Smiley

so do you then soak your bird in your solvent right after using the fabric softner?

Dawn, rinse a time or two, fabric softener and let it soak for a few, agitate the skin working the feather patterns, then rinse, rinse rinse.  I don't always use gas.  But, you could.  As DWC said, the bird has a pleasant smell.

You can put bird in Coleman right after but I don't.  I stopped using gas about a year ago.  After the wire wheel I wash the skin in dawn 3-4 times and rinse.  I then fill the lid of the downy bottle about 1/2 full of fabric softener to about 1 gallon of warm water and aggitate for a few minutes and then let the skin soak for about 10 minutes then rinse, rinse and rinse some more. Roll up in a towel to remove excess water and then blow dry.  Birds fluff up beautiful as long as you dry good.  Doesn't matter what you use if you don't rinse good and dry good.  Make sure you get the down feathers dry also.
