Getting better with age :)

Out of everything I have read since this morning, Paul Thompson said something that struck a nerve.  He said 'Anyone that is any good in my eyes, has trained under a pro, traveled some miles and snagged up lessons where ever they could get them, went to seminars shows and workshops, and found weekend lessons. Very few turned into good taxidermist just from setting at home and reading taxinet.'........I think that nailed it.

There are a few who can look at something and do it....that might be 1%. Paul's boss, Ray Hatfield, Michael Vaden, Rick Carter, Bill Yox, Marcus Zimmerman, that is a few of the 1%, but even they still study.  I've seen them him do things and helped a few do things hands on and then when left to my own skill level all alone I butchered it.  You must train, train, train, learn, learn, learn.  I've mounted 1,000's of deer and have a nice small studio, but i'm still traveling 2 1/2 hours west in one week to watch a 1 day deer seminar put on by the Texas Taxidermy Association.  I've mounted a bunch of Antelope and thought I did OK.....that was until I drove over to New Mexico and literally got schooled by Manny Chavez 2 months ago.  I always think my work is OK until I get out there and see others and get humbled real quick.  You MUST learn hands on or you will keep making your same mistakes.

It's easy in this business to get sucked in over your head and everybody who has posted or is going to post have made mistakes probably bigger than those snakes.  I bet everyone of us who have posted has had a situation in our career that embarrasses us.........it's what you learn from it and do about it that makes you what you are and what you will become.

Bob, i'm not going to bash you.  I remember one time years ago I did a bobcat rug, I thought it turned out pretty sharp and the ladies father came, picked it up and went on his merry way.  2 hours later I got a call from a pissed off lady telling me I was a $%^& piece of %$^&^& and called me everything but a white man.  I would have offered to give her the money back but she called me a son of a  bitch and hung up on me before I could offer.  Lesson learned from that, charge 3 times as much and send all of it out to a professional rugger.  See man, we all make mistakes.  If I were you I would refund his money back.  It may take 2 days, it may take you 2 years.  It may take $5 a week......but suck it up, pay the man his money back and move on.  It will make you feel better and make him have less heartburn.  I think I saw you post that you wanted to quit Taxidermy.  If I quit every time I effed something up or failed i'd be scrubbing toilets at the YMCA.  Suck it up and move on.  Go out there and get some hands on experience.  You say you couldn't afford it.....you can't afford not to.  I use to not be able to afford to go to shows, but I scraped, scratched, kicked and punched and made it there.  I have NEVER been to a show where I did not learn something.

This whole mess is no different than what many on here have been through at their personal business and are just too damn scared to admit it.  Are the snakes bad? YES!  But the Taxidermy overall is not any worse than what i've seen on nationally broadcast Taxidermy shows.

Bob, get some damn training dude.  Do what you use to tell everybody else to do on those bad dealing post's, make it right.  Don't give up.  Let this re-enforce the truth that you must get out there in this world, sacrifice and learn.  T said it best 'Very few turned into good taxidermist just from setting at home and reading taxinet.'  It helps, but it's just like online porn, it's still better to get the real thing in person.

I really don't think you need  "taxidermy lessons"  to know you shouldn't take peoples prized and valuable possessions and jack around with them if you are not qualified.  I have roofed my own house but I would never promote myself as a "professional roofer"  and roof someone Else's house.  I will risk my own chit but NEVER  some one else's, especially for money.

This kind of crap hurts all of us, as it is this very thing that prevents me from EVER using a wholesaler.  I just can't take the stress!

Out of curiosity, I looked up Redwolf's "record". He hasn't been active on this site since July 2010. That doesn't seem right, but that's what's listed

Cole,
This is the information that I just took from the membership list. Why or where do you get different info?

Its very hard to read all this as a moderator, and as well, a fellow taxidermist and friend of most of you. I feel that those snakes were a hurried effort to catch up on time, or a money problem, or some reason beyond Bobs level of talent. But I also know hes the same Bob that threw a few lobsters in a box for me in time for an occasion here, and never charged me a dime over what we had to pay for the lobsters. Hes a good guy that made a mistake. I just hate to see the collateral damage taking place now.

And I absolutely despise the way ANYONE goes to facebook to talk crap about any of us here in taxinet...

Hopefully we all learn a lesson about this, and how we behave in here when life is good. We might need that lesson when life isnt so good.

I almost hate to chime in here but here goes.... 1st of all those snakes are horrible and I do think that bob should do the right thing and refund his money, unfortunately I highly doubt he has any money to return to him.

Now with that said I Fully believe that Porkchop got what he deserved!!! I have ZERO tolerance for people like him and have to deal with them day in and day out. The guys that come in expecting my to mount there deer for $175 because some jerk down the street does.

1st he is not a professional and came on here looking for wholesale prices. (this is typically reserved for other professionals Not the general public)

Porkchop states some where on here how these where such prised trophies to him and how he can't go do it again or something to that effect. Seriously?Huh? I have no sympathy for some one that takes his prised trophies to the cheepest guy he can find!

He sent these to Bob based souly on price and I will call BS on any thing else. There are so many other GOOD people on here that have posted oodles of photos that he could of sent them to but he would of paid more. It is all about getting a bargain. Well that good price does not feel so good now does it??

He had mentioned that Bob said that Tom Voyer trained him (which incidentally is not true) so he felt good about sending them to him. Well why not send them to Tommy?Huh answer... Tommy charges $450 PRICE

Why not send them to Kerby Ross??? he has lots of nice photos on here....... PRICE!!

Why not send them to Jeremy?Huh He has tons of great looking rattlers on here?Huh? PRICE!

I had a guy come in to my shop bragging about how he went to Africa and paid $50,000 to shoot a lion and wanted me to mount it.... well he took it to a guy that charged him $1000 to mount it? I tried to explane to him that the form and eyes cost more then that and he was insistence that I was trying to rip him off by charging him 5 times as much. Wellll he came back with this POS and some how tried to insinuate that it was my fault be cause I quoted him what he said was "WAY TO MUCH" and told me that I was obligated to mount it for in now for $3000. I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants before I showed him to the door. WELL........HE GOT WHAT HE PAID FOR!!

Every one on here that considers them self's a taxidermist should take offence to this guy bitching about the work he got back from the cheepest guy he could find.

Bottom line next time you have something this special send it to the best you can find NOT THE CHEEPEST!!

Bob mounted these for this fellow and I am sorry they don't look as good as some of the other here but that's life. He got what he paid for!! Does that make bob a bad guy? No! I do think he has a valuable lesson to lean here too about getting in over his head!!

I took my truck to be painted buy the guy that had the best price and guessss what? it SUCKED! I learned a valuable lesson.

Porkchop I hope you learned a valuable lesson here!

A interesting oxymoron this so and so taught me , ( through videos) and then when the user of the videos gets in the $hit the video artist says i didn't teach so and so.  So if I buy lets say Joe Meder deer videos and study them religiously and go into the deer head business and my work is of poor quality, WHO taught me Huh Do these videos  say you will do quality work after these lessons ?  Is there a disclaimer in these videos as to the users level of expertize after used ?  Is there a disclaimer as to the finished quality of a deer head after using so and so's newest  sculpture of a anatomical accurate deer mannikin. Did you notice EVERY deer eye made is  "the most accurate deer eye made" , and there ALL different ?    I think the industry needs a good  New York Jewish law firm   to straighten this issue out. Where does the liability lie HuhHuh??

Just because you watch a video on how to drive a race car by Earnhardt doesn't mean you can win a race in NASCAR. You can watch the outdoor channel 24/7 and still not kill a deer and I promise you can watch all the porn you want and
not be the next John Holmes!
