breaking medium hides from fox to bobcat

ok, so Im only 15 and Im really wanting to become a taxidermist. It's my dream, and I will succeed, but first I need alot of tips on a couple of things. First off, I'm going to use Dixietan Paste, from my research its one of the best. Using the tan wont be hard, but the breaking part, that's where I need every tip known... right now im liking the twisting over a rope between two trees

You only break skins if you want a soft rug or soft wall hanging skin. Skins for mounting do not need breaking. There are plenty of ways to soften a tanned skin, anything with a sharp edge will work, bending the leather sharply over a board that has been beveled to a pointed edge will work well also.

Crazy is correct, after the tan, when drying the skin, you need to break it several times until it is completely dry. All wet leather will dry stiff, unless it is stretched and broken as it dries. Stop to soon and it will be stiff.

No, never heard of it. There are dozens of different tans used today, it is all preference to what you like to use. Don't know where you read about Dixietan Paste being one of the best, but it wasn't here I think. Who sells the stuff?

I dont exactly know where it originated, but I ordered mine from Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply. Seems to be pretty good, and it leaves the hide with a sasafrass smell
