I just ordered up some urethane foam, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how I'm gonna make a base for a flushing rooster.
I want a nice round foam shape to match the round wood base I'm putting it on than I want the weeds in the foam with dirt on top of the foam.

So I'm trying to figure out if I need to pour the foam in a bowl to get the nice round look?

Or better yet how will I put the weeds in, while the foam is setting up or with a drill and glue later on?

Will the glue and dirt want to stick to the outer layer of foam or will I need to sand down the foam?

If anyone could give me any heads ups or how to's it would be awsome,  If not I'll figure it out myself anyways.

Thanks

Ok,you can use bowl to get that round shape or if you have a bandsaw you can just cut it round after it has cured. You have to use some release agent in bowl to get urethane out from that. And I suggest you attach your branches, weeds etc. after it has cured by drilling a hole and gluing it in place. Glue sticks to the foam, so you don't have to put anything in the foam while it's rising and curing. It's sticky material, so if you put dirt in it while it's "wet" they will stick to it, but it would be harder to trim the base if you have attaced there something while it cures. My advice would be that you make the base first from cured foam and then attach what you want!!

Taxi-lover I imagine a thin layer of vasoline would work as a release agent wouldn't it?  Thanks for the great advice.

Laurier I'm afraid to make phone calls you could have some Argentina number that will cost my left nad to make a phone call.  Your welcome to drop me a personal message if you want.

I wouldn't use urethane foam for a project like this. I would buy a small piece of 2" foam board from the home center (look in the damaged item section). Trace and cut the circle to fit the base. Bevel the edge with an electric fillet knife or meat carver (you can find these dirt cheap at garage sales). Next mix up Elmer's glue, water, dirt (loam), sand and some twigs, dry grass, etc. Smear the mixture onto the base and you have a nice base for your bird. You can add a gloss finish to make the dirt look wet or matt finish to seal the dirt.

Vaseline works but it leaves also a coat to the final product and could also prevent paint or glue sticking to it. I think car wax could do the job better..? Hope you can do what you have imagined!!!

IAtaxi, Those turned out nice, I like them both. Where did you get the habitat materials that you used?

Jamie I beleive the stores name is Bill Dorans out of Waterloo Iowa(they just sell to buisnesses so you need your tax ID), but I beleive Hobby Lobby would have the stuff for half the price I paid Bill Dorans.

Also you'd be suprised how much of that habitat stuff I pick up at garage sales.
