$65 for your fur made into trapper hat or mitts!

WWW
« on: May 19, 2007, 09:26:06 PM »

Ok, I've been wanting to do this for several years, so thought NOW would be a good time. Here's my skull cleaning method:

Fresh skulls outta the freezer... Black bear, Grizzly Bear and Wolverine...

I cut off as much meat as my patience and time allows, the more you cut off the faster the maceration process is. It works either way tho. I have three lynx that I threw in the bucket whole.

And the bins that I clean in. Lynx are in the white bucket and bears in the blue bin. Both have heaters set about 82 degrees, higher temps (I've heard) can damage skulls. Don't want that!

So that's the first process, I'll get more pics in a week or so and add to this post... if it's still around!

Wolfwoman, what would we do without your expertise? I've said it before and I'll say it again: you truly are an asset to this forum!

I had been wanting to do this too. I'm glad you beat me to it, though. A guy could die waiting for me to do things! I'll get to work with one regarding beetle cleaning.

Anyone want to do one for simmering/boiling, or another method?

Can't wait to see the rest. Thanks a bunch,

Dave

Wolfwoman you are awesome! I always wanted to see the step by step sequence in macerating skulls. Even though just recently I adopted a dermestid colony from college.  I have always wanted to try macerating a skull. Thanks for posting the pics, I know there is alot of info on the subject of maceration,  but I'm the type of guy that likes to see pictures! Can't wait to see more pics. Thanks again.

Hehehe I like the pictures too, but that's just because I like all of the "nasties" involved.

I wish that prospective users of the maceration methods could only smell the maceration that the pictures will show. It's quite unlike any other smell I've come across. Glad there is a computer screen between me and those buckets!

Cheers,

Dave

Yeah Dave, I can definately agree that I'm glad their is a screen between us! Although I actually like the smell of frass, the aroma of bacteria rotted flesh would probally make me hurl.

Dave and Da Greek Yooper, thanks much...LOL  For some strange reason, smells don't bother me much. Cheesy  And guys, these are GOOD pics, give me a sec and I'll post some of some skulls I macerated a few years ago....

Rancid (love the handle), There is water in the bags, it keeps the teeth that belong to that skull with it so I don't have to sort them out later. I did a batch of 5 wolf skulls once with no bags, WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! LOL

It most certainly was! Those skulls were cleaned when I was living in an apartment in the Palmer/Wasilla area. I used to clean them in a spare bedroom in rubbermaid bins with a submersible heater and kept the lid on. Changed the water out about once a week to keep the smell down. Never had a complaint. Cheesy [

It's a good size griz, but the black bear is from about a 5' skin. That's a wolverine there for a bit of sizer reference. I'll try and remember to measure it next time I go out.
