Happy Holidays everyone.

I wanted to share a special and challenging project I recently completed.  About 10 years ago my father caught a 20"stream brown while fly fishing with me.  My father is not much of a fly fishermen and this was the largest stream trout he ever caught.  I put it in the freezer to mount for him and about a year latter my freezer went down.  As usual, I didn't realize the problem until I noticed a unusual odor in my basement.  That was 10 years ago and I just couldn't bear to throw that fish out.  I froze it back up in hopes of somehow salvaging it one day.

After working with Rick this summer, I mentioned the fish to him and he thought there might be a chance to save it.  a couple months latter I decided to pull it out and see if it could be saved and give it to Dad for Christmas.  As I proceeded I began taking pictures as I thought this would be a good example of what we can do even with a poor specimen.

Rick, thanks for all the advice on this project.  Your new brown trout video also was a great help when I began painting.

Here is the fish after beginning to skin it, you can see how decomposed the body is:

Notice the severe dehydration and decomposition in the head

The body was really broken down, the belly area was liquefied

The fins were in rough shape but I was able to bloat and cast all of them accept the pelvic fins.  For those I was able to mold fins from another 20 stream brown.

Here is the skin after removing and gently fleshing it

Here is the head after Rick's special recipe for hydrating fish

The cast head, still needs a lot of reconstruction, but a good foundation

Custom carved body

Head rebuilt and time to start painting

The end results

Dad believes this fish went in the garbage years ago, he will get it new years weekend when he comes to visit for the holidays.

Wow!! What an inspiring job!! That fish looked pretty rough but you really pulled it off. Congrats and I am sure it is a great present to your father!  As a former student myself, you also can't go wrong with a teacher like Rick.

Brian

Man, oh, Man that has got to be one of the nicest stories and tutorials I have ever seen.  Just the story and to see what you started with and then see the end results.   Oh how I wish I could be there when you give it to your Dad.   This is going to be one special gift for sure.

Good work on this one and keep up the good work.

Awesome fish work, esp. that garbage can brown there Brian. Amazing salvage job.

Rick you sure have a unique style of mounting fish. I like the idea of mounting the fins and skin separate. The results definitely speak for themselves.

Here are several pictures of this past year’s workshop participants and a few return guests from the 2010 Anglers Artistry workshops and the beautiful work they completed over the past 12 months. Please take the time and enjoy the work of folks just like you who took the first step!

The Anglers Artistry 2010 Student workshops participants!

Scott Teaschner Cody WY

We started off Scotts first day with a drive out to breakfast and some Eastern Turkeys just hanging out.

Scott’s first fish to work on was a unassembled Lake country replica Walleye!

Scott paints some custom Walleye eyes! The flints were the Still life eyes!

A nice paint job Scott worked out for his Walleye reproduction!

A cold snowy morning and a blue sky made for a big breakfast on the farm!

The second fish Scott worked on was a great Smallie reverse curve from Lake Country Replica’s as well!

Scott also took time to learn how to custom carve and work on molding and castings to create his stream Brown trout and Cutthroat trout! Well done on both!

Last but not least Scott found time to work on this Huge Dave Campbell Steelhead replica my personal favorite steelhead on the market!!

John Czerniakowski Reedsville, PA

This year we were honored to have one of the original members and the treasurer of the Pennsylvania Taxidermist Association Mr. John Czerniakowski . John is a distinguished gentleman who gave years of his life to the education system of the great state of PA as a teacher all the way to a Superintendent. Doctor Czerniakowski is a very passionate taxidermist and has truly given back to the industry a great deal! I sure hope you enjoy some photographs of Johns C’s workshop!

John had several goals we needed to touch on and some to complete in his 6 day workshop. The first of which as to learn to custom carve a 360 pedestal Brown trout incorporating a custom molded and cast head and fins. Here are some pictures of the work John put in to this cool Cecil Baird Brown trout which Cecil’s raises in Indiana by way of our great friend and great taxidermist Frank Kotula! This is a great example of fellow Anglers Artistry friends and connections helping one another out!

The next goal was to work on this beautiful reproduction Largemouth by Lake Country Replica! John aced this one with ease!

John also worked on some Reproductions of Smallies and advanced eye setting and oh Yes we took time to eat some of Kathie’s gourmet cooking! Eating in never a problem around here!

John earned his certificate of completion and I hope to see more work of Johns really soon!
