Yes, the salt slows dwn relaxing. That is the reason it helps hold hair on "suspect" hides. I don't use Ultra Soft, so I can't speak to that, but I have used RelaxR both with and without the salt. I prefer the salt.
Royal, I get salt from Tractor Supply Company. By the pallet you get a 5% discount. It is about $3.78 for 50 pound bags which comes in useful for measuring 1 pound per gallon.

How many capes can you get out of a batch of Ultra-Soft? (I make it in 20 gallon containers)

If you figure on 2 Quarts of water for every 1 lb. of wet skin weight - and each cape weighs approximately 7 Lbs. each (full shoulder capes) - then you should be able to do 6-7 capes easily! If you capes run a bit lighter than 7 Lbs. each - then 8-9. Considering you only use 1 fl. oz. of the Ultra-Soft (US-609) to each 1 gallon of solution - 1 Quart of it should easily do your 20 gallon relaxing bath.

Bill, your question sounds like you plan on using the batch more than once? I'm not sure you can do that, if that is what you are asking. I only mix up 10 gals or less depending on how many capes or skins I plan to relax at the time, if it is only one deer cape, then I would use less. I would want enough solution to cover it once it starts to relax. If the cape is sticking out of the solution at the time, I take a small container like a measuring cup and wet the hide sticking out of the solution by pouring some of the solution over it. I do this so that the whole hide will soften up at the same time. When the hide or cape starts to soften up the rest of it will become submerged. I do keep an eye on it to make sure it does get submerged so that the whole hide relaxes. So I guess the answer would be as to how many hides you can put into that solution at one time (without) over crowding it.

Bruce, you beat me to the punch. I type too slow.
Bill, if you go by what Bruce has to say, you can't go wrong.
