OK...where do you guys buy yours at?  My local farm store does not carry 100% fine grain salt with no additives like Krowtann asks for.  Also,  where do you buy your sodium bicarbonate or do you just get it at the grocery store?  I have one more question about dp.  Say you are doing a bird or mammal with dp.  Do you apply the dp then put it on the form or do you have to wait and let it dry?  Also do you use hide paste on the forms or some other paste??  Sorry for all the wuestions and thanks for your help......

i Cant find the salt in any of the supplier books.  You cant buy this locally without having to pay for the shipping?  Seems like this would cost lots for large bags of salt.

Derek, where do you live that you can't buy salt cheap?  Most of the larger grocery stores sell it in 20 pound bags in the baking section.  Right there beside the baking soda that you're looking for.

You might try the larger warehouse chains like Sam's.   They have larger bags of baking soda.  I haven't had any luck with finding large bags of salt at our grocery stores either.  I use a cattle salt that only has a tiny bit of calcium added.  It works OK for salting hides, but can leave a blue tint to your leather if you use it with krowtann, at least it does in our weird well water. Good luck in your search.

If you have a Food Lion near you, that salt is some of the best I've ever used. It is SUPER FINE almost like sugar and it covers exceptionally well.  I think it runs $8 for 20 pounds, but it's cooking/baking grade fine ground salt.

I buy my salt from Walmart, the fine grain salt and baking soda are in the baking section. For use in my pickle and tanning solutions I use Morton's White Crystal salt(for Water Conditioners,99.5% salt). It comes in a 40 pound bag at a cheap price.
With the DP, you apply it after the hide is fleshed and then mount. If you can prevent the hide from drying out it will taxi much easier.
I use hide paste on everything, my two favorite are "Stay Put" and Noonkesters "Real Ears". The Real Ears, I started using on more then just ears. It is pink in color, which shows through the hide giving it that flesh tone. Actually when I use it on deer ears I don't paint then like I use to. There are many things you can use for paste though, I've heard of people using latex caulking. I remember back in the late 70's we used wall paper paste because our manikins were made out of paper. Just think out of the box, if it sticks to the hide and the form you probably can use it. Check though to how fast it dries though.

I get my baking soda at Cosco (warehouse store) my salt is food/ feed grade salt at the local Conserve. Most ag. type outlets can order most anything you want. I don`t think you want to pay shipping on salt from a taxi. supplier.
