I am fresh into the industry and i am tryin to correct my mistakes. On my first mount it seems that my epoxy sculpt around the eye has begun to crack and peel. I cant understand why? I know i can repair it, but tryin to figure what went wrong. Also is there any substitute to epoxy sculpt around the eye?

Was the mount dry? did you use equal parts of each side of the epoxy & mix thoroughly?

Do you have a pic you can post?  Is the epoxy itself cracking or is it pulling away from the glass eye or skin and look like it's cracking?
I wondered the same thing as Bill, maybe the mount wasn't completely dry when you filled with epoxy and now that it's drying, the skin
is starting to pull away from the eye.  What animal is it?  Something else that may have happened is if you set your own eye with clay,
the clay may have shrunk a little even after everything else was dry.  Let us know a few more specifics of what the animal is and how
it was mounted, maybe we can be more help.  Good luck!

My bet is you did not let the mount dry all the way. Also did you thin this area down (big as a base ball) around the eye on a deer mount. I mean thin as you can closer to the eye without cuting holes. Ive had it happen and thats the trick. If you put anything in there and it fits then the skin tightens up it will look like a crack. Dig the old out with a knife and redo.

Two things could've happened. If you are smoothing the apoxy out with water, that's a no no. You are rehydrating the skin, and you will get some shrinkage. Use laquer thinner, it will not rehydrate the skin. Two, the mount may not have been completley dry even though the eye area is one of the first to dry. I bet you used water.
