I've had several calls about becoming an official SCI measurer.......here is the quickest and simplest way to become one.  First you have to become a member of SCI......which is a great addition to your business statement anyway.

Call the Safari Club International office in Tucson, AZ at 1-520-620-1220, give them a CC number for the $100 cost of the Home Study Official Measurer Course, and your membership if you need it.  Study the received material at your leisure and lastly take a written open book test at home.  Send the completed test back to Tucson for grading and if you pass the written test they will make you an Official SCI Measurer.  You can then measure your own trophies, your clients trophies and anyone else that desires to have them recorded in the SCI Record Book.

Down the road....and after some experience you can attend a live hands on class and become a Master Measurer.

There is a live course at all NTA Conventions........you can attend this class to become an Official Measurer as well.

This will be a great drawing card to your business, but remember to tell hunters that you will measure their trophies on your own time, at your leisure.....otherwise it will consume your
" business time".

I took the SCI measurer course at NTA/Louisville a few years ago. It is great info to have but I found I just decided to keep it quiet. As a one person operation, I had no desire to have some guy 3 hours away call and want me to measure his room full of trophies. I know this scenerio is more for Master level but I just saw it as an aggrevation that I didn't need. Many of our local big buck contests are sponsored by a competitor and I don't want to be a clearing house for his contest and not see an increase in my business. I do measure my clients animals but choose not to use it as part of my advertising. Since I usually work 60+hours/week in the shop I have no free time.

Certainly becoming an Official Measurer, for any recording system will take up more time than you will sometimes choose to forfeit.    Needless to say some of us are always looking for some way to advertise our business, or get on the inside so to say of activities that go on in our respective regions.   I just thought that maybe someone would like this info to be able to enter into this realm and possibly extend their advertisement to another level.........surely they will have to work at it and in the long run they will more than likely ask them selves "why did I get into this" because of the time expenditure and the measuring of other taxidermists trophies.   I guess I do it for the self satisfaction of being able to do it..and I have never turned down another taxidermists clients for measuring their trophies.   You must be smart in how you conduct yourself in this.....measure for everyone...but you set the times and the limitations as to how this will be conducted...take charge of your own parameters.

Question for Olytax.  Is the $100 kit you refer to something that you buy from SCI after you join or is it purchased somewhere else.

Thanks for the info Buzzi  did not realize it was that easy to become a scorer. However I agree on the advertising part. I became a SCI member, and I am on the board of directors, and on the committee for our SCI  fundraiser. Before hand I didn't get much African work, and now I get several safaris every year. I too will become a scorer for SCI. It might take a little of your time, but the more involved in your area's Hunting and fishing organizations , and I mean get involved not just attend, you will see a big influx of new customers. Then it's up to you to do a good job and keep them.  Tim
