I've been through all the catalogs that I have and I can't find a 30"(18 pound) halibut reproduction.  Does anyone know if there is one on the market? The customer does have the fish, he brought it back from Alaska frozen because he was told it's a"left handed" halibut and thus is unusual. NO, I am not going to try doing it myself, don't even go there. He wasn't even positive about the exact length, close to 30", was his description. Right nowI'm just looking for something in that range, so I can tell him if it's available.

Old Fart, you might check with "Fantasies in Fiberglass" (907)260-3500  in Alaska. Looks like he has a 31" halibut, but I doubt if it is a left-handed one. I have yet to see one in all of the halibut I have caught, but hear about one or two every year being caught around SE Alaska.  I think its around one in 20,000 halibut are left-handed. Be a cool mount, hope you come up with one!

If you can picture a halibut in a typical fish orientation: anal fin and pelvic fins 'down',  dorsal fin on 'top', etc. then on a typical halibut both eyes are on the right side.  On a left-handed flatfish, both eyes are on the left.  Hope that gives a little insight on left and right-handedness in flatfish.

Old Fart,  I'd be willing to mold and cast it for you.

thank you for the definition of left handed halibut. I hope to get up there next June to see my son at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks and we are going to go halibut fishing. Maybe a lefty will catch a lefty! object in life: to learn at least 1 thing new every day...I now have a good start on today!
thanks again

Fritz, I assume you know it's quite a distance to halibut waters from Ft. Wainwright...........but worth the distance to have a chance to experience that!

yep, my Dad has friends who live in Kenai who are very anxious to take us out in their boat. We hope to fish for salmon, also. There is decent salmon fishing near Fairbanks, isn't there? If not, we will find it! My son will head to Iraq next October so this summer is an important one. He is in the military intelligence branch ( I know, oxymoron!) and is an interrogator, so hopefully he won't be in the hot zones. But I guess you are to go where they tell you. Anyway we will have fun no matter what we are doing.

flat this are round fish when they are fry when they go flat the eyes and mouth twist to one side this is usally the right on halibut but however on all flatfish you get freaks like twisted to an unsal side and place wich are red and brown spots instead of the other way round
