K9 Deer Recovery

« on: October 24, 2006, 02:35:31 PM »

Anyone tried this product by Van Dykes?  Wondering how tanning turn out.  I'm skeptical about not having to salt or pickle, does this tanning really work for deer capes and smaller animals?  Would you recommend it others?Huh

I have read only small portion of directions, and one does not need to salt and pickle, just remove fat and meat, then apply Krowtann and mount, that simple and easy.  I am interested in getting some if it works that easy.

No, Dont apply it and mount, you must not have read the directions.

Krowtann is a product made by Ozarkwoods and sold thru VanDykes.

You mix the amount for a deer as called for in the instructions, with water and salt.

Split the lips remove the meat and fat, then soak the hide/cape for two to three days then follow the instructions on fleshing, washing and neutrailizing.

Krowtann is a submerge tan, not some topical junk.

What I don't send to the tannery gets Krowtanned. Just follow the directions, people get in trouble when they start playing with it.

I also use Krowtann, and love the results! Like everyone says just make sure to follow directions. Leave in the tan for at least 3 days, but I do 4. The product is fairly cheap, I dont understand why you would want to cheat with it. I wouldn't want to explain to the customer that his cape slipped over a few dollars! All in all a great product.

I use it for everything...Just got off the phone with Brian and he stressed that the Liquid Tide step is vital to the tanning process...1/2 CAP FUL....should be adequate...(just wanted to pass that on for those that may not know)

I use Krowtann exclusively on all of my small critters like fox, lynx, coyote etc. I like the simplicity of the stuff. I have also used it on wolf and caribou but I normally send my bigger game out to the tannery.

It is a lifesaver and I thank brain and his comapny so much for such a great product...it really helps when you are in a sh*tstorm of hides like I am now...3 elk and 6 deer and 2 deer capes...all tanned within 2 weeks...I usually give my skins about 4 days to soak for good measure.

I have also used Krowtann with excellent results!!!  Yes, I was very skeptical at first, but I do like the product....I am very skeptical of the 1HOUR TAN offered by Authentic Taxidermy Supply....Can you honestly tan a deer cape in one hour?HuhHuh    I AM NOT GOING TO GAMBLE AND FIND OUT..............  Good Luck!!   Wink

NickyG, I've used the One Hour tan on a deer. It worked just fine, I just like Krowtann better and will stick with it. I know someone that uses the One Hour tan on ALL her small mammals and loves it. She's very reputable and wouldn't be using it if it didn't work.

I have never used it so I can't say if it works well or not.I read 50% of the folks who swear by it and the other50% have problems.I'm  convinced in my procedures that the intial salting is critical for most processes. It locks up that hair.I've tried cheating by not salting and just going to the pickle.Thats when I had many a cape that had loose hair problems(and yes I know the pickle locks the hair up?!).I went back to salting up front and haven't had any problems since.A good article written by Glen Conley is all about using detergents like Tide, causing chemical slipping-if thats the proper term. It's on his whitetail designer web page. JohnW, I know the article you are speaking of, and it made me wonder about the Tide, but that is how the directions are wrote so I figure it must be there for a reason.
The people that I know of that have had problems with Krowtann are the ones that did not follow the directions. If you could do whatever you wanted with the stuff, why bother having directions, afterall, they are there for a reason. Start playing with it and who knows what will happen, same with any product.
