I'm really interested in taking time to learn taxidermy; however, I live in Fairbanks, AK now- so going away to a school is not really high on the list of things to pay for at the moment.

Out of curiosity, in general, do those of you with shops mind people interested in taxidermy coming in to inquire about possible apprentice positions/asking if you would mind someone hanging around to help with the little ditty tasks while learning?  Should I call and ask first, or just show up?  I have seen quite a few successful female taxidermists posting here, but the local shops are all guys.  Have any of you ladies out there had a difficult time convincing someone you DO want to work with dead things?

I saw a few local places listed in the phone books, and some signs while driving around, but I didn't know if it's a normal thing to just go in and ask questions.  It's a pretty small community all things considered, so I really would rather not make a bad impression or bother anyone.  For that matter if anyone who reads this happens to be in the Fairbanks Northstar Borough area and would not mind meeting up to see if you would want me around your shop feel free to let me know!

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Lupa, I can only speak for myself, but usually, when a guy off the street shows up my first inclination is to tell him that I'm a taxidermist and not a teacher.  Having said that, I've taught half a dozen people who are now in business for themselves.  Most of them were long time customers first.  They attempted simple work and asked my opinon.  They attended competitions and had their work critiqued by others.  When they each reached a point where their work was good enough for my customers, I had no problems subcontracting them for work.  But as far as having someone "apprentice", I like to work at my own pace (that's why I'm a one person shop) and I don't like the gnawing feeling of having to babysit someone trying to work in MY SHOP.

If I were you I would just stop in . Don't call first . Stop in and meet people face to face . Start up a conversation and check out their demeanor . If they seem like a grumpy George type of guy , who doesn't want you around , leave . If they seem willing to talk for awhile , express your interest in learning . Don't do it over the phone ! Phones are way to impersonal .  Don't be shy ! Go for it !

B.S. have you ever met me personally?  If you haven't, your initials stand for something more obvious.
