Sixfan, a "test fit" is always for the face itself and for the girth of the neck.  The ears will always flop down the back because of the reasons I listed.  You simply cannot position the ears properly in a test fit.  Your nape area is open, so you've already shot the atlas measurement all to hell with that situation.  This ain't rocket science.   If the face fits and if the neck fits, then your job is to MAKE the ears fit.  Deer are anatomically the same and I've yet to see one with ears coming out of their spines.  As Bobbi Meyer and Glen Conley discussed ad nauseum in an earlier post, the ear is actually connected directly to the brain by the aid of an auditory nerve at the end of the auditory canal.  The length of that canal is only an inch long.  If your ears aren't directly over the brain cavity, then you've simply screwed the pooch.  This is one case where you CAN'T allow the skin to dictate what you do. It HAS to be the anatomy when it comes to ears.
Very good. That's all I needed to know. Like I said, I am attempting to make my 1st go at mounting a WT and everything seemed great in the test fit, except the ears. You probably know what I am talking about when I say the unfinished ears seemed like they were going to be too far back on the head during the test fit (lots of slack in that area) I just wasn't sure if this was normal and if I should proceed with the mount. I guess once I actually get going on one and finish it, I will be able to see the full picture.

Thanks, George. I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback to us beginners even though I know you probably get tired of seeing the same old crap on here. You've got tons of respect from me already.

Six,

Do not worry about all of the slack. You will be surprised once you start to sew how well it all comes together. I was on my first whitetail. I have done 6 now and I learn more an more with every one I do. The best advice is to use good reference and study the anatomy of the whitetail. Trust me it will make a huge difference in your mount.

If you have any question, I will help you in anyway I can. The guys on this site have helped me a ton! The least I can do is give back.

Thank you Whitetail Finder.  When I was young, I often got thrown out of taxidermy shops for asking simple questions.  In those days, everything was a secret.  I swore to myself that if I EVER learned how to do it I would share that information to anyone who asked.  Thankfully, thousands of others ended up feeling the same way and Ken Edwards, a true PIONEER, tied it into modern technology where everyone can now share.  Never stop "giving it back".  It can only make you a better taxidermist in the end anyway.

I agree 100% George! I read all of your post and if I have a question I look in the archives for your post and post from Dennis, Kenny, Cole, Michael P, Terry, and I know I have left out some one. If I cant find what I am looking for I will ask you guys and you always are willing to help. That is a true testament to the great people involved in taxidermy. I cant wait to attend some of the shows and actually meet everyone. I believe the more people I can help the more I will be blessed.

I can never thank you enough for the help you have given me so I will keep helping everyone I can and passing on everything I learn.
