Most people, including David Ellzey ( The Squirrel Man ), use borax or dry preservative on squirrels. Any tan will work .Krowtan is easy to use and would work fine . I generally use 20 Mule Team borax and have had no problems with any of the squirrels I`ve mounted. Just make sure you flesh it completely.

I tan mine the same way you would a fox,Bobcat or any small game animal. The only exception is that I run a cotton string through the tail and out the very tip. Pull the string back and fort a couple Times a day to make sure the pickle and tan gets up in the tail good.It acts like a wick and pulls the liquid in also. Randall

But isn't Borax only a protection against vermin?

Borax works well as a preservative for thin-skinned animal hides, birds, and many fish.

Do you tan the hides with something or just use borax alone?
