Rug Help Please
«

I'm a bit confused with the proper procedure for doing a rug. For starters, I plan on sending the rug to a professional after I mount the head. Do I just let the remaining pelt/hide dry out prior to shipping and let the rug maker do the rehydrating and stretching? Second, who does the softening of the hide or am I suppose to oil and break the hide before sending it out? Thanks!!!!!! STEVE

Here's what I do: Send it out to get dry tanned, upon return, rehydrate the head and neck, prep, measure and buy a shell, mount the head, once dry, send it to your rugger, upon return, finish and paint.
I recommend dry tanning to get the hide fully worked/stretched. I drop whatever I am working on when I get a hide to be rugged from the tannery, so it is out of my shop and moving along in the process. Get paid up front on rugs, a lot of people seem to lose interest in them over time.

Jimmy is right. My wife does rugs. Dry tan it. Rehydrate the head only and mount the head. Ship to a rugger. They will rehydrate and mount rug and ship back to you for finsihing. You can actually finish the head before shipping to a rugger if you prefer.
