Just curious as to what others do. I've done all the above. Seems rude to answer the phone, but you could be losing business. At the same time if the customer sees you NOT answer the phone, that can look like you are avoiding calls. Undecided

i have done all three choices but 99% of the time I will just go ahead and answer it, only time I do not answer is when I am just too busy into doing something, such as using bondo, and can not answer, then I let machine answer.

Depends on the customer. As in how much time have they just spent in my shop BS,ing.  If I think answering the phone will give them the hint that it is ok to leave then I will answer it.

I always answer the phone, or if Mike is right there I tell him to take over the phone duty during the time the customer is in the shop. The customer understands that he/she is not the only one bringing in a trophy, and I never had one complain about someone feeling being ignored while I answer the phone. It usually only takes only a minute the most to finish the conversation. For price shoppers quote the price, someone wants to bring out an animal tell them to come on.  Smiley

Excuse myself to answer the phone, then tell the person on the phone I have a client and each is just as important, will the caller allow me to call them back?

My wife is my secretary / intermediary. she screens mostly all of my calls so I do not have to deal with the crap phone calls & most of the time can answer any question a client might have , or she passes the phone call to me if I need to talk to the person.

If we happen to miss a call our answering machine picks it up so we do not miss the important calls.

RJ, that would be nice, but it's just me, myself, and I. Which one should I let answer the phone? LOL  Sorry couldn't help myself.
