I'm about to give up trying to find it locally and pay the dang shipping which will be more than the plaster itself. But before I do that, can anyone tell me if the "premium" plaster (not plaster of paris - it's cheaper) that Michael's/Hobby Lobby sells is the same ting as #1 molding plaster? It says it picks of detail better and is stronger than plaster if paris. If it is, I can get it here for about the same, or a little less, as ordering/shipping then having to wait for it, just have to buy lot's of containers of it (8# ea, I think).
Thanks.

here is a link for hydrocal which is stronger than#1 molding plaster and its $15 for 25lbs
they aslo have Ultracal for $20 for 25lbs
the Monster makers site motivated me to start my first mold, since then I found I didnt live to far from the Smooth-on factory in PA, so I started dealing with Smooth-on directly, but monster makers is still an exellent resource for information and supplies, they also have Chavant clay which is a dream to sculpt with and its hard to find else where. and as far as shipping they are about as reasonable as you can get, my last order I got a bunch of sculpting tools 10lbs of chavant clay, 50lbs of (WED) clay, and it was only $35 to ship. So check them out, and look at their instructions  section, some good info there, and tips area too.

merrrly merrly merrly  life is but a dream,  the moment is unachievable, dreams of the past, fantasies of the future, at what moment are we truly alive
in the time it takes to read this how many moments have passed, who holds the meter stick to define it?  We do, dont let life pass you by.

Becky,my guess is,it is #1.Van Dykes has #1.Check their price and look up a price for shipping,UPS or Fed Ex and compare to your store price.Buying in small quantities can be expensive.I buy plaster of Paris locally for base work etc..If I want to make molds,I bite the bullet and get #1 grade shipped in.

Thanks Jeremy.
Jim, Van Dyke's plaster is 17.89/50# + 21.31 (39.20) to ship. IF that "premium" is the same I can get 48# for $30 here.

Our dumb lumberyards don't carry it. Some of them carry plaster of paris.

Then get plaster of paris, same stuff. Any lumber company should be able to either. both will work fine.

You can check   them and have them check with US GYPSUM (sp) they may be able to get it thru the warehouse.

I checks a local company and the can get all of the dencal, hydro cal thru  US Gypsum for little more than #1 or P.O.P.
No shipping if I wait for the truck to run, they have to order it for USG to deleiver it on a regular schedule.

LOL, Randal. It was at a little mom & pop type hardware store here. I almost never think about them but they usually carry "odd" things that the big chains around here don't.
