The Oklahoma Taxidermists Association would like to acknowledge the loss of member David Cowley.  David was found dead at his home in Altus, OK Saturday, March 1st.  David was a superb bird taxidermist and won many state, national, and world awards during the 1980's.  He judged and presented seminars at shows across the United States  He also wrote bird articles for Taxidermy Today and Breakthrough magazines.  David had elected to have his remains cremated, so their will be no funeral.  The OKTA morns the loss of a fellow taxidermist and request your prayers for his family.

*totally stunned*
Dave was one of the first bird specialists I ever met and really got to know. Perhaps THE first.
I remember a lot of crazy moments from some of those early TTA conventions.  Tongue
I'm gonna miss that guy  Cry
I send my condolences to his friends and family.

I truly believe that in some ways we lost David some time ago, he was one unique individual who not only knew birds, but knew how to live life in a very different way. Im sorry to hear this news, and hope his family is well. David, you were really something!

Geez, I knew David. Gonna miss him.

I have to tell this story on David, The Arkansas Taxidermist Assoc was having a show and David did a great seminair for people who had never done birds. So they supplied Mallard Drakes and then the work started 12 hours later the class had some of the most awesome ducks you have seen done in any class anywhere!!!

So the next day David rented a pretty big boat from the marina in the state park where the show was held.
David, Sonny Skinner and I were running down the lake at 55-60mph and David told Sonny to take the wheel. Sonny did I looked up to see David run to the back of the boat and jump overboard.

Sonny  said "what to hell did that idiot do?" as he truned theboat and headed back.

I was lmao so hard all I could do was try to say He was "POWER DIVING"

We got back to David and he was laughing and giggling  sayine "Wow man what a rush!"

Gonna miss David thats certain! and the Taxidermy world will too. He set a lot of standards back in the day and I don't believe bird taxidermy would be where it is today without him.

Many years ago Dave came to our convention in Michigan.  He was overconfident and brought a good but not great bird to show.  We have some excellent bird taxidermists in Michigan and I if I remember correctly his bird didn't even place.  He showed us what he could do though.  The following year he came back and won best of show.  I got to know Dave during that time and to me he was a very special person in many different ways.  He will be greatly missed but his contribution to the taxidermy world will live on forever.

I've got a Dave Cowley story, too. I first met Dave at the Wichita, KS. NTA in 1982. He had entered an American Merganser(I think) without a base under it, just wires sticking out the back to keep it from falling over.  And he asked EVERYBODY what he could do to make it better.  I was so impressed by his desire to improve I sent him a Golden Pheasant later that year.  He brought that bird to the NTA in 1983 in Minneapolis, this time on a base, and asked what I thought of it.  Well, it was a pretty good interpretation of a Golden pheasant trying to imitate a Ringneck pheasant, and I told him so. He always took criticism to heart and learned from everyone that he could.  I believe that he won the National Championship the next year with a Canada Goose.  We kept in touch for a while, but I eventually lost track of him.  We'd renew our friendship at various shows where we'd both show up and EVERY single time he always thanked me for sending him  that Golden pheasant. I believe that the last time I saw him was 2003 at the World. I know of no one who surpassed HIS enthusiasm for bird taxidermy. I too, am sorry to hear of his passing. Every time I look at birds in a competition it always brings to mind that American Merganser in Wichita. Now it will have just a little different meaning.

Dave was a friend of mine for many years. I was going to hunt with him this past season but he said the birds were just not there. I first met Dave in colorado at the state show. He was the bird Judge in 1987. We quickly hit it off. He and I ran into each other at other shows were we competed. We also partied together and had a mutual friend Jim Pitts. I painted two differant paintings for my friend Dave the Hosier and with pleasure gave them to him. Dave you will be missed by me and all who knew you. God bless this cool dude who was a awesome bird man as well as a awesome friend.
