Welcome to fish photo Friday!

This is a posting were everyone is welcome to post pics of fish or fish related items created in their studio.
The more pictures the better!! Cool

Here's a picture of a blackfish Skin Mount . We custom molded and cast a replica head because of extensive oil and cartilage. We have a number of pics for your review.

Pic two is of a  spawning male rainbow skin mount with a replica head. The fish was in the stage where it's skin was becoming quite leathery.

Picture three is a palomino skin mount with a replica head.

Blessings to all,

Greg & Son's

Have a good week!

Greg,  what's the story on the gills in your nice blackfish mount?  Did you cast them?

OH MY GOD!  You guys are not taxidermists!  You guys are agents of Mother Nature!  Wow really beautiful stuff!  And I still say Mike does the best Stripersout there!  Look at all the detail painting he did.  Most Striped Bass are pretty basic, but not his.  Really all these fish are just awesome!  Show us more.

Hi Jerry,
The gills  in the blackfish are made from a  heavy art paper, and trimmed with a fin scissors.

Great fish everyone- keep posting!!

Jerry....the long catfish whiskers are 12 ga. wire ground to a point on the end and built up with epoxy. The short whiskers are just round toothpicks coated with thin epoxy.

Wow, every week I just see more and more awesome stuff in here!  Great work, everyone!!  Wink

For this week is a project that has been on and off again (hurry up and wait) over the last half year and is now complete.  It is a 58 lb. fresh run Chinook from the Kenai that is a skin mount with a cast head but original fins.  My client had it skinned in Alaska when he got off the river and only brought the skin back.  I took measurements off the skin and then searched through my old patterns to find something that would work.  He was set on a coffee table but since the fish wasn't skinned as a pedestal mount, we decided to represent it as freshly caught and laying on the river bank with the fins spread/curling as if still alive.

My client actually does woodworking as a hobby (engineer by trade) and made the table himself out of cherry.  The photos show the table set up but without most of the glass (a couple pieces are in place).  The top glass is an oval 1/2" thick but the sides are a more manageable 1/4".  He makes several trips to the Kenai per year and brought back rocks from the bank of the Kenai in his carry-on luggage each trip, and was dead set on using real rocks despite my concern for weight.  I thought it would have been better to use some larger artificial rocks and then have some artificial water on one end representing the edge of the river, but we had to toss that idea because of how he designed the table base.  Well, longer story short, I just do what they pay me, and this is what we ended up with.  I actually ran out of the rocks he brought back. We figured with the weight of the rocks, glass, and wood that it weighs a little over 200 lbs!  Shocked   Luckily he designed it with a modular approach so that it can be assembled and disassembled fairly quickly for transport if necessary.  Somewhat jokingly, I told him he should just keep bringing rocks back and adding them over time, because the weight issue is past the point of no return, and the additional rocks will actually make it look better by layering them.

He has more oval glass (smaller ovals) and we will be doing an end table or two in the future to make a complete set, so that will be fun.

UFD,
Very niceeee.
How many people would be able to do a job like that if a customer brought a skinned out fish with no measurements? Huh
I know I would probably send them down the road Embarrassed
Also, thanks for the new pics in the reference section! The colored up Coho with tippings is exactly what I've been looking for...If you have a full body shot of that one, please post  Wink
