I use a heavy coat of nutmeg spray paint. After dry I apply another heavy coat and sprinkle sand on while still wet. After that is dry I apply another coat to lock in the sand. I then shade it with a little dark brown and a hint of green. If the sand should come loose you have the first coat to hide the pink colored bondo. Works for me and everyone that sees them can't believe that they aren't real rocks.

spray paints are great for base and color, but don't over look tools like chalk and pencils( colored or charcoal) for adding nice touches to rocks, and yes you can manipulate your paint job with abrasives, it depends on how or what order you layer your paint colors. Washes can be a nice touch too, for getting in the crevises. paul
