what kind of sealer or spray should u use to finish that will hold up to food and not develop bacterial

there are food safe finishes, but not sure if they would inhibit bacteria. Most food safe finishes are safe for food to be consumed if it comes in contact with the finish. I would look at a hard fish that would stand up to cleansers, . Rock hard tabletop varnish by Behlen. or a poor on epoxy they use for bar tops. Or maybe a laquer finish like Behlens Qualalacq 755 . ck out a woodworkers supply catalog for these products. woodworker.com. paul

I gotta ask, how often do you plan on cleaning your dinner table?  Bacterial growth???  I built furniture for years.  Sand your wood, stain it with a good stain and then coat it with lacquerl  Many of the woodworking suppliers as well as Lowes or Home Depot sell brushing lacquers that go on much thicker than the spray lacquers.  Put the first coat on and allow to dry to seal in the stain. Sand lightly and put a second coat on to lock the stain and let dry overnight. Then lightly sand with 0000 steel wool, wipe clean with a resin cloth and then paint a final coat of lacquer on the table.  Tung Oil works well but takes a lot more work to get a quality furniture finish.  All commercial furnitures that I'm aware of use lacquer finishes on their wood.

thanks george thats what i thought i was told something else...i think i will stain it and use a 85 lacquer and put a couple of coats on..after i stain it should i seal it with sanding sealer

George is right, I go with 3 coats, like George said it is important to the appearance and feel of the table that you sand between coats. I usually sand my final coat with a 600 grit paper and then buff out my shine. Hints the reason for the 3rd coat.
