I'd like to get anyones take on this line from the Michigan Taxidermy Laws.  I know what i was told that it meant, but I dont read it like that!       A person issued a taxidermy permit shall only posses game or protected animals for the purpose of taxidermy at the location described in their taxidermy permit.   Any thoughts?

It means you can only have the animals at the address listed on the permit and the animals at this address are to only be used for taxidermy purposes. It seems pretty straight forward to me  Smiley

then why am I told that it means I cannot have any of my own animals at this address? Regardless, if they are for my own taxidermy needs. Also, I was told that it is illegal to have any food in any freezer at the address listed on your taxidermy license(Michigan)

The way I have been told is if your shop is in a seperate building and your freezer with your meat is somewhere else on the property there is no problem.  Even if it is in the same building but in a seperate freezer it is OK.  It just can not be mixed in with your specimens.  I tag and log in all of my own animals to mount just like a customers.
The way you make it sound, you couldnt have a steak from the local store in your kitchen refridgerator.

Hmm, now how would they KNOW what's in your freezer without a search warrant?

I was waiting for you on that one George.  I understand what MT means though, as do we all, that some of the verbiage used in the regulations can be confusing...  I had a few questions on the NC laws and called one of the local DNR Officers for clarification, and he was just as confused as I was...

A person issued a taxidermy permit shall only posses game or protected animals for the purpose of taxidermy at the location described in their taxidermy permit

MT -I see them basically meaning that ALL of your traxidermy specimens have to be kept (and worked on) at the address listed in your permit...  you cannot store them elsewhere...

but to be certain, contact the DNR...

Great point George!  It shouldn't matter WHAT is in your freezers, your closets, cupboards or anywhere else in your shop and/or home.  As long as your records are clear and concise there is not a problem.
The wording in the law you mention is virtually the same in every state.  Interpretation varies with each Officer but basically it says you can't keep taxidermy specimens in the cooler at a processor across town or at your friend's house.  The specimens MUST be stored at the address listed on the permit so that DNR Officers know where to find them if a specimen on your records becomes the subject of a criminal investigation.
FWIW...this wording is usually a part of the Inspection Statute that some Officers use to routinely "inspect" your business by emptying your freezers onto the floor.  If you allow them to do it you deserve everything you get.
Know your rights!

M.T it means just that your address on your permit. That is where the specimens are kept not at the inlaws or brothers with a different address. Your own animals can be kept there but they do have to be properly tagged.
