Rock mix w/ tempura paints

When mixing rock mix with tempura paints do you find it makes the rock mix set up realllllly fast? Does it make a difference if you use powder or liquid?

do yourself a faVOUR AND GO TO THE HARDWARE STORE AND BUY SOME CEMENT COLOR-IN POWDER.  oNE TEAspoon equals a bottle of tempra

Tempra paints...tempura is the stuff you eat.  If you already have the paint use it.  I haven't noticed a difference in setting time.  Just have to increase water a little if powder paint.  If you are going to buy something, cement coloring is easier.    Good luck & have fun!

When I make rocks using the rock mix.. I dont mix any paint and once dry, I mix some tempra paints with water and use a brush and (wash) it on, then use different colors Browsm reds, black to acheive results. Once dry, if it is too dark I use a damp sponge and dab it off and highlight spots... once dry again I seal with a matte spray sealer. Works pretty good.

I do the same thing Hoytman does. Put it on after the rock is set up and wipe it back down to what you want.

The rock setting up fast is probably just your mix. I make my own out of molding plaster, cellulose insulation, dextrine, and vermiculite. It sets up really fast. I normally recruit the wife to help spread it on because I can't get a batch on before it goes off.

I mix mine in small batches at a time, this will allow you to keep it uniform when applying it. After it sets up, I apply my stain and wipe off to get the desired color. I wouldn't mix my color into the mix. By the time you get the color mixed in, it is already setting up. Plus it is easier to get the color you want by applying it after the rock is set up.
