If your going to use your coon to mount you should either set them on a drowner line or lay a piece of plywood with a hole in the center. Under the plywood dig a hole deep enough for the trap to fire but not so deep he can't get his paws to the pan. Wrap some foil around the pan and put some smell good in there. These are the only two sure fire ways I know to keep them from chewing on fingers. A #1 coil spring will keep chewing to a minimum but it still happens some. A 1.75 is a good all around K-9/cat trap but I prefer over kill and 4 coiled mine. I also have some #3 four coiled that I use for the biggest of beavers or a few yotes that have pulled out of my 1.75s.
Yes a snare WILL leave a burn ring around where ever it holds.Atleast every animal I have ever caught in one had a burn ring. I caught an accidental otter once in a snare and I couldn't hardly give it away at the fur sale. I am no expert. These are my own personal dealings and thoughts.

The 1.5 coil spring is great as mentioned above for fox and below. I have however caught alot of yotes in them and held more than 90%. But, I would not recomend it. I use a 1.75 victor with a extra base plate added on. With offset laminated jaws. With # 2or #3 music wire springs and if not allready 4coiled I 4 coil them. I like the cross stakes if I am in soft ground for the extra hold But in ordinary ground I use cable stakes best thing ever made in my opinion If you have a good puller. Save alot on time and back aches. And you don't have to carry a truck load of stakes with you. If you are looking for something a little bigger look into Bridger traps There #2 and #3 are great traps. The 1.5 will do for the rabbits I dont specifically go out ot try and catch rabbits but I have caught some on accident in fox and coyote sets and no harder than they fight never lost one. There is a few getting upset with the trap talk so any info you need feel free to message me or check out my page if you are on myspace.

I will help you anyway I can. Sorry, to the rest of you for talking trapping I know that this site is not for that thought I would help. and I would recomend the 2or 3s for flat sets and the 1.75 for dirtholes such as step downs or trench sets. And kinow the 3s are not to big and the size of the trapp has nothing to do with a animal chewing there leg. Coyotes are not bad about chewing there legs anyway. If you trap for the live market as I do I would recommend the 1.75 as I use with the offset laminated jaws to save on the damage on the foot. If you need any advise feel free to ask be more than glad to assist you and recommend some great suppliers. I also shipp my fur off to the NAFA and have never sold a otter put up correctly under 100 dollars and snare quiet a few of them use stop locks keep the snare mark down to a minimium. 220 bmi mags are the way to go for otter. These are my own opinoins not facts I am a very avid and successful trapper. But, mostly just trap yotes.

the #1 1/2 double coil is the best all around water set trap. The perfect mink trap, will hold most all coons, and great on muskrats. After all, the muskrats is where the money was this fall. I got $9.50 straight accross for my rats, 26 for male mink, but unskinned coons averaged $7.00. that kinda sucked, so I have a freezer full of coons to let my kids mount.
