either use a bug bomb or spray alot into a trash bag, then spray on the wood itself...  insert into bag, tie shut and let sit ...

bugs that run out of the wood die as they run into a poisonous area...

Ortho Ant & Roach Killer. Spray the log and place it in a plastic bag.  Place it in the sun for a day.  OR, you could take that DC Catalog your so proud of in another post and put it in the bag with them. The stench of that thing is bound to kill them off.

That was a good one George, Brushwolf also you can take it and put it in the freezer in a plastic or paper bag and let it freeze unless it is a very large piece the wood would ( ha ha, wood would) not insulate it enough to keep the ants alive and they would die after a few days in there.

chipd, not to be a smarta$$ but what happens to the ants in winter time?  IM pretty sure freezing them wont kill them.  Youll have to use a bug killer spray of some kind.

Kevin H. not to be a smart a$$ back, but in the winter time ants will hibernate under ground, not in driftwood, it doesn't provide enough insulation. So that is the reason I said to put them in the freezer for a couple of days. This is the same method used to kill ticks.

Ive seen them in wood when i used to work at a sawmill, they would be in some rotten logs in the winter time.  When they would get cut out, they would lay on the table the boards came down to and start to warm up and start moving.  Im not saying your totaly wrong but Ive seen them in wood in the winter time, so not all ant go underground.  (And these were ants too not termites)

if you dont have access to a dry kiln you will need to bake it in an oven at at 200 deg. most household ovens dont go much below 200 deg. bake it at 200 deg. for about 4 hours this will take care of your ants as well as any other eggs that may not of hatched yet. I have debuged alot of wood over the years with great success. If you ever need a big piece debuged I can put it in one of my kilns for you or any one else who would like it done

Ditto on putting the driftwood in the oven.  That is the method many aquarists use to make driftwood safe for aquarium use.  Just heat it up to about 200-300 and throw the wood in for about 4 hrs.  any little bugs will be dead.

Guys, only one trouble with baking your boards:  THEY COME BACK.  Kiln dried lumber still gets infested with termites and carpenter bees.  You need to prevent that for as long as possible.  Permethrin is a great product for as long as you can buy it.  We used to soak them in DDT and they lasted forever.

Why don't you just buy cedar driftwood and you wont have bugs in it?
