There have been several posts on here on how to make your own rock mix. Most of them include the same basic ingredients. My question is where are you getting the vermiculite and the dextrine from. Local stores or online suppliers?

The vermiculite you can get at Menards or another building supplier in the insulation dept. They use it for blown in insulation. The bag will last you a lifetime. Dextrine I get from most taxidermy supply places.

I'm sorry, I just GOTTA ask.  Don't you guys have enough work to keep you busy?  I can buy rock mix a whole lot cheaper than running around buying the ingredients, mixing it, and storing it.  It's free when you build it into the customers price anyway.

George, I think thats what I am going to do. I really dont need the extra hassle. Beisdes, for the amount of times i need to make rocks it would be senseless to buy a lot of material.

Thanks,
Matt

Buy the dextrine and whiting in bulk next time Van Dykes offers free shipping on internet orders. Now you can make your own hide paste and rock mix with added ingredients purchased locally. I used to use McKenzie rock mix with good results but figured out how to make it myself. Now I can add/remove ingredients for different applications. I guess you would be better off purchasing premixed, as required, if you don't have room for storage. Not cost effective in my opinion.
