Marty I have a 63 Merucry Meteor that avarages 25 pmg on the hwy and it has a V-8.
79 Chevy Citations withthe 4 cylinder would average 42 hwy. and 35 city. I drove one of those a lot and hated it when the buiness sold that car. talk about room.
You better check these new cars are HYPE thats all HYPE.
My 66 mustang with a 200 and automatic would run 28 mpg on the hwy until I fiound the coil wire was going bad then it went to 29 mpg.
Marty did they ever put full sized seats in those Hondas? Last one I rode in the seat was made for people about 5'4" tall and not near large enough for the 6' 200lb American man.
John, funny you should mention the Chevy Citation. My dad had one and it was quite possibly the biggest pile of crap GM ever made! First off, they never made a '79 Citation. It came out in late '79 as a 1980. It ran until '85 and then was discontinued (Thank God!) I don't recall the MPG claims they made, but they were nowhere near what they said because I remember my dad bitching about it! Marketing crap back in oil crisis times and many folks took the bait.
FYI, highway mpg estimates are misleading. A full size Chevy truck can get 25 mpg highway if you keep around 55 mph. That's because those V8's are barely running at the RPM's they hit on the highway at 55. The BIG difference nowadays is the combined or in town estimates. Actually, I should say numbers, not estimates because the numbers today are factual. Back then there was a lot of fudging to get those number up for the window sticker.
John, it's an option to get full-sized seats on Hondas, you have to special order them - lol! Yes, my Fit is quite comfortable and gets close to those numbers with the AC on. Keep in mind today's cars have polution stuff and safety equipment adding weight to the puzzle and still get far better mpg's than they did back in your time. Another plus with my Fit is it's almost two years old and has 30K miles on it and I can sell it for close to what I paid for it! I don't recall my dad making much money when he dumped that POS Citation...
