Remount it, your already thinking about it, you KNOW that you want to. And I bet that you are going to do it anyway,,, some day, or you wouldn't be asking. You will listen to the don't do it's here, then one day down the road you will be walking by and you will make a snap decision to tear it down.  We should always strive for continuous improvements. If it bugs you, fix it. You won't be happy until you get it to where you want it.

I'm with Mr T on this. (If it bugs you, fix it. You won't be happy until you get it to where you want it.) For years a whitetail and caribou mount I had bothered me. I held off because the cape of the animal does mean something to me. I came across a couple capes that I thought would do the mount justice and remounted them. Now when I look at them, they don't bother me, but remind of the time I took them.

Todd, it's a tough call, especially when it has alot of meaning to you. Think about it for sometime, if it still bothers you when you slow down abit, tear into it and be sure to post some pics!

Easy solution. leave it alone and kill a bigger one. thats what I would do . And it doesn't look that bad either. I see way worse on here ALOT. i also see way better. Just kill a  bigger one this year and you wont have to worry about it.

Matt and T gave great advice.  Like T said, If your already considering a re mount, you already know what you want to do.  I've re mounted some of my personal deer.  Yeah it sucks to not have the original cape, but personally I know I'll kill more deer that I will use the original cape on, so losing this one isn't that big of deal.  I've got one right now that I did 5 - 6 years ago that could be better and some how got the rack tilt off, it's tipped too far forward.  It will be remounted soon, and it's on the original cape, oh well.

You said the original cape was a short haired, early cape.  Personally, I'd search until I found as close of match as possible.  I'd wait until I had a short haired cape of the same size.  If your real lucky, you may even find one with similar hair colorations.  Just be patient.  I've got antlers that I've had for nearly twenty years that I'm waiting for the right cape to come along, along with my taxidermy skills to reach a level to do the antlers justice.  One of my pet peeves is awesome antlers on a crappy mount.  No matter how cool of antlers, if the taxi work sucks , it just ruins the eye appeal.  JMO.

I use DP and my customers like the steroid look thats mostly what they want. I like the mount and the muscal look it gives it character. I have mount a few spikes that I have mounted over and over with DP but to me had the same ending result so the next time I do it I'm going to tan it and see if that makes a difference and how it goes together but over all I would be proud of the buck anyways

Hey Todd, My best deer was killed 10 yrs ago and if I can find a southern cape that's real close to the measurements then I'm going to remount him. My mount has some major issues with some hair falling out of the brisket. I don't know what to tell you on yours, other than it's your call.

If you remount it you will get better and then you will see the flaws in the new mount and then you will want to remount it, then you will see the flaws in the new mount, then you will remount it.. This could go on until you die.

Leave it alone and in years you will be happy you did, its the original hide!!
