We were fishing the river the other day and my buddy caught a rio grande perch. The state record is 10 inches long and 1.59 pounds. This one is 10 3/8 inches and 1 pound. I have never seen one before and it has alot of turquoise spots on it. Mounting it will not be a problem the paint job will be a challenge. The eyes, I am hoping to find some but haven't yet. My question is do I find an eye that is close to the color or what. I have some pretty good reference pics but don't know how to post them. Any help would be appreciated

That's a huge rio. They are really neat fish. I've caught them in mexico but don't have any reference photos. I can't think of a more difficult fish to paint. I've skin mounted a few over the years and they are a bear. They are in the chiclid family like peacock bass. They are a little fragile like crappie but have lots of tendons that attach to the skin from the inside making them difficult to skin.
I would repo it instead of skin mounting.
I'd love to get some photos of those. I have a replica that I'd like to paint up.
Good luck,
fishdude

If I knew how to post these pics I would. The only fish I have mounted is lm bass, a couple of dozen and I am getting to were I am kinda liking my paint job. This perch should be a challenge on every aspect of the mount. If you want fishdude send me your e-mail address and I will send you the pics I have. I can send it from my yahoo account, I know how to do that

Gulfcoast if it weights more than 1.59 pounds you have a new state record. The state record was caught in the South Llano River in 2001. The one we caught was not as dark as yours.

Yep, 2001, It wasnt that long ago. Did you guys catch yours in the south llano?...thats where I was.  caught this one and few hundred other monster sunnys, largemouths and guadalupes. I have caught some big rios, but this little chunk was hard to put in the boat.  they fight so hard.

I am going to make a mold of this one but I have several others not so big.

I recon it will be like painting a small coral grouper of a coney.  tiny little brush and lots of patience?? It will take a while I think Smiley

Caught it in the nueces river just north of CampWood. i think I will skin mount this one cause I have never done a Rio. And I have yet to make a mold. I don't want to screw this one up, I believe I can mount it OK

They are a fresh water, and they don't get real big but up a good fight for their size. I really don't know what family they come from but they are plentiful down here in SW TX.

They are the only native member of the Cichlid family
I fished for them in Mexico they are quite tasty and the spawning males get a cool looking white head.
