Texas Cichlids and Rio Grand Perch are the same species.
(
Herichthys cyanoguttatus
)
It was recently moved to the genus Herichthys and was formerly of the genus Cichlasoma.

I always thought the texas cichlid was Herichthys carpintus, I had one for many years and picked it up from the the distributer myself and it was sold under the name carpintus, i was told the common name for texas cichlid, it matured to be the most beautiful cichlid i had ever had, the body shape was the same as the rio grande perch but the colors were much different....i was just curious if this is the same fish you are to refering to as a texas cichlid? or a seperate species that i was told was the texas cichlid?

(Herichthys carpintus) Is known as the "Green Texas Cichlid" or "Pearlscale Cichlid" in the aquarium trade
and more known by the common name of Lowland Cichlid by other groups.
It is very similar to the Texas or Rio grande cichlid but is slightly smaller and it is found in Southern Mexico into Central America.
It basically picks off where the (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) stops.
Your fish is a very typical carpintus with larger turquoise spots.
A beautiful fish for sure.
I raised a breeding pair of both Carpintus and Cyanoguttatus. Its very interesting seeing the color and shape transformations of both species when spawning.
Beautiful fish, but very mean.

okay, i was confused for a moment, thanks for the background! that pic is not my fish, it is one i found on the internet. but mine looked identical to it, i had a friend who had one also and large portions of the side of this fish would turn jet black when stressed, it also was not as colorful as mine so i assumed it was a female, thankyou for taking the time to clarify that for me

twiggy that is the red version I was talking about. I think the red version is a product of the pet trade.

I have a breeding pair of these in my 250 gallon aquarium at my shop. They constantly have eggs and babies, but the babies never seem to make it past about 1/8" in size. I think the peacock bass takes care of them. LoL. The males get a big white knob on their heads as they mature and they are super aggressive. I started with 10 of them and the breeding pair killed all of the other ones.
