The scales are loose like a crappie or even a tad worse.
they are not too fatty though, unless its a larger fish then the heads seem fattier.

Id go the custom replica route personally, although I mold everything Cheesy

by the way... These rios are EXTREMELY good to eat baked in a garlic herb butter and lime sause.  sprinkle on a bit of parm. cheese when done...

They are good.
We had some that we caught on the shore, and traded the rest to a farmer for Ice cold coronas.

They are beautiful fish for sure.

Lucky you... I live a solid 6 hours east, about 30 miles north of houston. I love the area between rock springs... those little rivers up  in through there have some UNBELIEVABLE fishing. 

This was the first solidcolored rio I have pulled in (often they are half cream/ half rootbeer colored with a cream stripe in the middle)....most of the time you can really tick them off and aggrivate a strike...just like their cousins, the peacock bass.  where there is one, there will almost always be another, cause they hang in pairs.  keep throwing in there and you can most of the time snag the mate as well.

certaiin parts of the llaano is full of these BIG Rios like this and I have seen others larger... You can catch dozens in a day up to 10" no problem, and 8" to 16" guadalupe bass....in the hundreds  Shocked

They are a bear to skin mount but it can be done, just take your time. Pull the body out without trying to get close to the skin then go back and carefully flesh. You'll find lots of tendons up in the head area just like a peacock bass only the scales are looser.
Joshua, New wave has a cast of a small one, 7-8" that I've used. It's a nice cast. It doesn't have the hump head but very useable.

I have seen the cast. its good, but I would like to mold my own, since I have a specific pose in mind.

Joshua, I have to go back to work and be back in 2 to 4 weeks,when I get back I will catch some and send you pics,you can pick which ones you want and I will ship them to you.

Gulfcoast, We have lived here since 99, I love it axis and whitetail are everywere, but when our son finishes school next May we are going back to East Texas I have a place on the south side of Toledo Bend. Going to get back to fishing the big lakes. Our oldest son has settled here in CampWood so we will be 4 or 5 times a year. There is nothing better than walking the Nueces and fishing deep holes of water. It's a blast

Hey Guid, I have a half a mind to wait until you get here to mount it but I'm not. WHEN you do come down I know where they are and we will catch a mess. I will leave your cousin at home, I know how it pisses you off when that boy of mine smokes your a#$ when we fish together.

That is a Texas Cichlid. You can get them at any good pet store. I have one right now about 4 in. They come in red too. Im sure the wild ones have better color.
