Hi,
I once made an artificial ice base with a waterhole (ice-fishing-scene). I used plexiglas for the main base and covered it with epoxy and added clear plastic flakes, that you can buy for cents as a snow substitute in a christmas decoration shop. A little snow pile was added using shaped styrofoam as a base. Maybe this will help you. If you use plexiglas as the main base, it should be at least 1/4 inch thick, otherwise the epoxy will bend it when it cures. I add a detail photo from my mount.
Greetings from Germany
Oliver

From what I have read the salt will tend to yellow over time.

That's a neat idea Oliver. I'd like to see the rest of that fish too.
I've used a layer of thin polyester quilt batting "shredded" a bit in a bed of acrylic resin. You could use fiberfill just as well. For slushy ice on top, WASCOs artificial snow mixed with clear silicone works well.

I have used the salt+artificial water method with good results. It seems that all water, snow, or ice scenes tend to yellow over time .. not sure how to prevent that.

polyester resins will always yellow. Try clear urethanes to prevent yellowing.

Try clear ice resin from Smooth on. you can add their white additive to the resin if your worried about yellowing. Also use the white additive with the crushed foam for snow. Look at the TREX Cafe at Disney Market place for the three peak Createk Mountain with winter habitat. This has been used at Cabela's in East Hartford Ct and Scarborough Maine by the staff at Createk.
