Absolutely Awesome!! I'm just getting started, so i hope to have some pictures to show soon!

Nice. Like the carp, Bruch bass, and Katula Brown the best....
All I have are two commercial, wholesale fish.
Repro Mahi Mahi..sorry for the background, no time to "cut"
Walleye skin mount. The flash really intensified the white....
-
Here's a replica I posted before but I'll post it again. And a skin brown
-
VERY nice bluegill. Not an easy fish to pull off with convincing results.
-
Here's a lake trout from a lake in Canada's Yukon Territory. The customer 'gutted' it before delivery but made a mold and cast anyway.

Thanks for all the great postings!

Rick, Thanks for posting the pic.s. Inspiring to say the least. That bluegill blows me away. Did you get any other pic.s of it (angles, close-ups)? I would love to add those to my reference porfolio. Thanks.
-
Love the Bass by Kenneth Bauman.
Oh and that Atlantic is insane!
30" Brown Trout custom mold/cast
-
My fourth attempt at a Brown Trout. This one is a reproduction. Excuse the base, not sure how I want to finish it yet.
-
Wow...those browns are great. Very beautiful work! You guys with your coldwater posts make me wish I had more trout work around here...Texas.
I absolutely love to paint trout, and truly enjoy seeing the many variations in color and shape on those buggers! Great eye candy, or "fish porn" as they called it in the last fly fishing magazine I read. LOL
The pics from the show are outstanding for sure. Both of the bass were sweet....the Brownies, the bluegill, all works of fine art.
Ive been skinning and mounting for 2 weeks, so I should have some wholesale stuff to post soon. ::)
Really outstanding stuff everyone!!!
-
Rick,
Thanks for the post of the winners. My carp is a tough item to photo. And a huge thanks for your informative seminars. For the ones that have never sat thru a Rick Krane Seminar , you are missing out.The information anyone gets is way beyond what the seminar is about!!! During the slow times Rick is exploding with more knowledge ,that most people can take notes. Many Taxidermist can produce great mounts but few can produce and teach then keep the intrest of the crowd like Rick.
THANKS SO MUCH!!
THE TRASHFISH

Thanks for the plug Rick. Only one problem, you have moved me about 90 miles to the South. I am actually an Okie. Anyway, here is the shot Ken Edwards did at nationals of my bass, it is a little better photo. And thanks for all the great seminar tips. I enjoyed meeting you and look forward to seeing you in the future. Congratulations to Frank, Tim and all the other winners. The carp was very eye catching.
-
Wish I could have made it to the NTA show. Those are some really great looking fish. Congratulations to the winners.
-
So sorry Ken I made the correction! LOL! Terry a big thank you to you as well for being such a gentleman and a friend!

-
GREAT LOOKING FISH! AA love that brown, that is one color phase that i have the hardset time getting to look right and you nailed it!
-
I should if all goes well have a few fish in here this week.
Here is the first.
A replica of a 10" Inland Redband trout
This was a chore to work up.
It is a wall piece and is attached through the base of the tail via a brass rod, that is soldered to the copper leaf and is attached to the base of the rock.
Not only that, scale tipping is a pain in the rear on a 10" fish LOL

What absolute gems have been posted this week! :P Kudos to everyone creating and sharing such incredibly beautiful work. I wouldn’t even know where to begin on trying to pick my favorites, and most certainly there is no shortage of talent in the fish taxidermy world! I’d love to be able to chat with each of you about your fish projects, because the enthusiasm you are obviously putting into your projects would be very contagious. ;)
Well, freshly finished from me this week is a 22 lb. Steelhead (38.5x21) from an Olympic Peninsula river. It’s a skin mount with a cast head, but the natural fins. I know I have said it before, but I think these large salmonids will look more proportionate, realistic, and attractive if cast fins are used on a skin mount. One of these days I will take my own advice, even when it requires twisting my client’s arm. :)
I find doing a realistic darker salmonid much more difficult than doing a realistic bright salmonid. I have yet to find that desirable combination of color balance so that all areas of the fish appear in comparative and/or complementing hues to each other as on the real fish. I just can’t be thankful enough that there are people that will actually come and pay me for my mistakes and take the offending critter away with them to haunt me no more, and so that I can try to get the next one hopefully just a little closer. :D

WOW amazing steelhead!!
-
UFD,your fishes are absolutely AMAZING,week after week!!! What kind of eye's you use and do you paint them by yourself?
-
Dave that is a increadable steelhead! I love to see your work. You are so right this week is one of the best with every ones contributions.
Tax
-
Wow what a bunch of nice fish! Hey is that a flex eye in Orthobor's bluegill Rick? If it is I guess it goes to show you can use them in competition. I've heard a lot of people pooh pooh them but I love 'em.
-
Cecil why start controversy on here. Why don't you post a picture and keep the smart ass remarks to your other BS posts. You start off saying something nice then you start with your Cecil BS.

Tremedous fish this week ! I think this has been one of the best group of fish posted !
This week I have a West Slope Cutthroat. The Blank is from Dennis Arp..... 8)
-
Dondi that spotting around the spots on the back is so real looking how did you do that? Great fish!
Tax 101
-
Tax 101,
You can create a light halo around your spots with powders or the air brush, in an attempt to show more depth to your spots. Hopefully the spots will appear to be in the pigment of the skin.

Tax101
Smart ass? I was asking a question. Who yanked your chain? You are the one that is out of line. And who are you anyway to tell me to post a picture? I post pics all the time.
I'm serious. Lots of competitors paint their own eyes or use glass eyes. I've heard lots of negative comments on the flex eyes in competition. If Mike Orthobor uses them they can't be that bad can they, as we all know his work is some of the best we will see? I use them exclusively and in competitons, and will continue to do so. Other than some walleye eyes going yellow on me after a few years I love 'em.
-
Thanks Crankin!
Jknuth... that is a sweet little Rainbow...it puts me in the mind of a Joe Tomelleri illustration.
UFD...that steel is SCARY real
Dondi...your new eye setting technique really adds a nice touch to your work.
-

What a true statement!!
The fish on this thread are absolutely awesome! The Stehlings put out some GREAT fish-- what an operation they have there! Congrats to Ken, Frank, Gary and the rest of the Taxi.net folks that entered (not just won) fish at the NTA show.
-
Steel head skin mount.
-
Fantastic bunch of fish, you guys really impress me. I can't wait for this fall when I have a little more tiime to practice.
-
OK I know i posted this before but after looking at it the color was way to flat. so i took a few outside pics. they turned out more true.

Hay Gang! What awesome fish this week for sure I'm with brother Dave SWEEEEEEEEEEET work this week! Did I catch a whiff of romperoom??? Tax , Cecil is a good guy and perhaps was just pocking a little fun with me as I perfer glass hand painted eyes over the flex eyes. Flex are in my opinion are fine for some folks but when you learn to paint your own there will be a nother fun option for you to work with. it is all in good fun so lets just keep it fun and every enjoy each others beautiful work!
Have a great weekend!!!!! Keep up the great work gang!
Your friend Rick

Thanks Rick. I know I can be controversial but I honestly try and keep that in Current Events. I truly was interested in how folks felt about the flex eyes Ortober used. I wan't knocking anyone.
-
excellent work this week!! i need to get something going!!
-
Congrats everyone, The Fish posts this week are fabulous. I especially love UFD's Steelie. I love all his posts, but this is hands down my own personal favorite. The coloration of his photo is what we see here in Michigan the most.I can't wait till next March for the MTA convention to sit through a couple of days of instruction with Dave.
-
Its been a while since I posted a pic, so here is a saltwater species (redfish). Photo taken in natural lighting.

A 10" Rock Bass replica
I used the rock that i did the silicone mold making tutorial on.
Rock bass are very tricky fish to catch the attitude and colors of, I dreaded working on this fish because of that. I think he turned out well.

Nice looking Redfish!
such a neat looking fish.

A 22" Male Coho (Silver) Salmon
This fish was caught in September at the lakeshore of a small tributary into lake Michigan. he has the slightly darkened sliver colors of a lake run coho, with the start of a kype in his jaw. A real gem of a fish when i caught him.
This is one of the first silver salmon or trout I've done. I used Liquid scales (amazing stuff) and liquatex interference colors. AGhhhh scale tipping !!! After a while it becomes relaxing then you try to blink and realize your eyes are dried open :D
The fish is a skin mount with cast fins and head.

Thanks Rick for that post. Sorry I didn't get on here to say it any earlier but I was at a great wedding this weekend up in New York. I will make a post about it as it was a fishing wedding or something like that LOL. Great Time............
Also many thanks for those who like my brown. PS thank Cecil, it's his brown I got.
The NTA show was great with my wife and all the friends we met there. Thanks to all and Congrats to all the winners and those who competed.

Thanks guys, I’m glad the Steelhead meets with some approval, and WOW, all the fish this week need to be in someone’s museum!
Taxi-lover, I end up using a selection of different eyes, including Flex Eyes, Aqua Eyes, Tohickon 150’s, Tohickon 137’s, and Van Dyke’s Natural Eyes. This Steelhead had hand painted Natural Eyes. I still haven’t figured out a foolproof method of painting them, but usually it involves both airbrushed lacquers and hand painted acrylics.
Terry (Trashfish), I’m kind of looking forward to being in your neck of the woods next March, too, but I'm having a little bit of trepidation. I’ll be nervous as heck hoping I don’t let you guys down on useful info for the real world!
-
What nice fish.
Dennis- VERY nice steelhead ...nice tipping.
Josh- That rock bass rocks !! They can be hard to pull of correctly, and you nailed it !!
Angling Artisan- Like your brown trout, wish I could find more trout blanks in those natural poses.....
Fishworship- What a gill ! Very nice.
Andy O- Thanks. We try.
Have a good week ~

Always enjoy seeing the many awesome fish! I do believe that is one of the best redfish I have ever seen.....very, very nice. I am seeing shimmers and glimmers and lots of neat effects on those scales.
The bluegill has a neat outcome, I am still wondering about those scales though. Is it an illusion, or are the scales that pronouced????
Rock bass......boy, you can't keep -em off the line in these parts. Nice repro. The scales look so crisp.....just curious.....are the fins real? They look so thin and almost like they were backed. Transplants?

The fins are all fiberglass.
The pectoral fin is translucent the rest opaque.
-
Here is a little male spawing rainbow. It had these monstrous spots instead of smaller black ones. It looks rediculous but it was what reference to the fish that I had. Not a good pic but here it is.
-
Just put this 36" Kansas Stripper on the wall today. He has been in the customer's freezer for the last 9 and a half years. Had one good side to work with.

Be careful Den you might be accused of creating controversy! ::)

controversy is my middle name! Buhahahahaaahaa!
Hey Cecil when do you harvest your big brown and brook trout?

Hey Cecil when do you harvest your big brown and brook trout?
I was referring to the thrashing I got for asking what others thought of Ortober using flex eyes. ::) I don't know who taxidermy101 is but he came unglued. ::)
I may take some browns out of the pond this fall but they may only be about 14 to 15 inches. Next year in the fall is when they will all come out (Brooks and Browns) in the 4 to 7 lb. range.
-
cool Cecil Ill take note of that!
oh and about the thrashing. Eghhh, people need to lighten up sometimes. Life is too short to be angry about something 24/7.
My view on flex eyes is similar to Rick's. Its great to use once you know how to paint your own. You cant take a shortcut before you know the way to your destination!
Or as my Art Professor said. "YA Gotta Learn how to ride the G Da#@ bike before you go jumping the grand Frickin Canyon!!!" lol

That's similar to what I used to tell my taxidermy students that were already planning competition mounts before they mounted their first fish. I told them you had to learn to walk before you can run.
-
Mr. Campbell Dave, do you ever have the chance to do any brook trout. I would like to see one that you do. Thanks your friend Stan
-
This is my second crappie. I know the photos are not great but it is not in it's habitat yet
-
this is my last red i did 40+lbs nice spots
-
Josh,
Beautiful job on the Rock Bass !
Rich,
Thanks for your comment on the eye set of my Cutthroat !
-
All of your guys stuff is so amazing I want to cry. I cannot wait till my airbrush gets in and I can try one of these on my own. I just love fishing and the look of fish. I guess its good I'm allergic to fish so i won't want to eat it just mount it.
-
This is my first attempt at posting here so I hope I don't mess it up. I attened the National convention in Louisville and had a great time. Met some great people and touched base with old friends I hadn't seen in a while. Entered this Rainbow Trout and got a good third with it but saw the Carp across the table for me and considered it the class of the open division....great work. Learned a great deal from the critiques from Rick Krane and the fish judge Mike Orthober....thanks for the help guys, I will put it to good use. This is a very good thread with many talented people providing great advice on fish taxidermy, I look forward to doing the same and learning together.

Heres a largemouth
