Title: My Ear Turning Tool
Post by: Monkey Man on April 09, 2008, 04:31:14 PM
Howdy,

I just finished mounting a mule deer for the first time.  Those huge ears posed some problems that I hadn't faced with whitetails.  To aid in turning them to the entire edge, I created a tool that worked good for me.  Thought I'd share.

First I took a regular coat hanger:

Then pulled the bottom of it up:

And then used a pliers to bend a point in the top to turn the tip of the ear:

The tool is used by inserting the wire up into the end of the ear until the tip, and exerting light pressure with the fingertips until the tip of the ear is reached:

You can bend the tool to your liking, and it also has a handy hanger handle built into it!

Hope this helps!

Cool, that just goes to show that alot of stuff we take for granted are actually useful tools with the help of a little ingenuity

Lol, that's funny you said that, I actually took it out of my closet.  The shirt on it is now on the shelf, lol.  Another victim of progress in the form of simple innovations. lol

Excellent idea!!  Thank you so much for thinking of and sharing it!  Simple, cheap, perfect.  I don't know anything but mule deer ears and can turn them just fine...but I'm still going to use this for them!  Thank you MM!

Lol, After viewing the overwhelming response to this post (209 views at last count) I'm considering rushing to the U.S. Patent Office and Requesting a "Wire Coat-hanger-Like, but Very Useful and All-Purpose Ear Turning Device" Patent.  lol, jk, hope it helps y'all.

Oh yeah, I do have to give some credit to Randy Life for instilling the idea in my head.  His fleshing system in the Jonas catalog is what got me thinking.

Even though it's not a tutorial per se, I still nominated it.  I don't know when that category will get here, but when it does, I'm sure this thread is going to make all sorts of folks say "HEY!  I LOVE THAT!"

Thanks for the nomination, Lisa.  Has anyone heard when, exactly the tutorial category is coming out?

No...I asked Ken if I should stop doing the Report to Moderator thing to nominate things.  I bet I've done it at least a 100 times.  I started losing track of what I've nominated.  So I asked him if I should stop nominating.  He said "Hi Lisa, Please don't stop!"  So I can only guess that it'll be here...eventually.  It's all good as long as it's coming.  So's Christmas.  ;) ;D

LOL, I'm sure Ken's hard at work on it, we just have to give him some time.

Don't be so giving with your good ideas, If you post it you give it up, In all seriousnus, If you have an idea do some reasearch on it , it could be worth a million dollars. Most people don't give  a second thought about sharing a helpful idea, but if you share your idea via the web, you lose all rites to that idea or product unless you apply for patent pend, I know this website is about sharing ! but if you have a good idea for a new and improved product. do some reasearch before you post it , it could very well be a 1000000$ idea

Your welcome.  Glad you could use it.  With something like this, I'm glad that I didn't patent it.  Just glad to share a little tip made from a common household item that helps out alot.

I have seen some ears where a hanger would not put a dent in them. Some you will have to scalpel open all the way.

Yes, this tool is just used to turn the edges, not the whole thing.  I still use a scalpel and ear turner to get most of it, then this fancy tool comes into place.
