Okay.. I am kinda new to this. I am an avid hunter but have never really saved pelts or done anything with coon tails or squirrel. My son wants a raccoon tail.. or even a "coonskin cap". I am guessing it may be easier to simply buy it. However, I have a family of coons that just moved in near my property. So, when the season is in, I'll probably hunt them. So how does one save the tail to use as decoration for crafts or whatever the boy wants it for? I may save the squirrels tails that I harvest this year as well.. any thoughts on that?
thanks!

Well, You just need to get the tail started by skinning it down at least 2" but don't cut the tail bone off the body you will need it to pull the tail bone out of the tail skin. Then you will have to perserve the skin by dry preserve or tan it. Then you will need to put a rode or I use a close hanger if you want a stiff tail, or you can order a coon tail form from a taxidermy suplie compeny.

why would you use DP .. DP would make it stiff ..... but any whoo .. pull the tail bone .out of the tail and send and give it to a taxidermist to tan or get a tanning kit

Im with brushwolf... Have it tanned.. You cant wear a Dp'ed coon or it would be really stiff and also if it gets wet it will rehydrate..
Dry tan it and make a nice cap out of it :)

Brushwolf, he did say he did not know what his son wanted to do with the tail, so you could DP it and put a form in it to have a stiff tail mount. And I also said or you could tan the tail, You should read fourwheelhorseman's post better befor you down talk some one else's replies.
