I must have stepped over this guy while I was looking up into some trees along the field road while I was trying to photograph some birds.
When I turned around to start back the way I had come there he was about 10ft away between me and my truck.
He had his mouth open the whole time I was shooting.

I stand corrected! I guess that's why I don't do reptiles. I do know it scared me almost to death! Thanks for the correction though.
I corrected my original post for those that may be seaching for Cottonmouth reference photos.

I suspect its a pregnant female and cottonmouths will display their mouths as a warning. She was just chilling, warming up the babies inside. they are ovoviviparous., live birth.

Every cottonmouth ive ever seen has had its mouth open like that, they dont like humans at all.

they are agressive but usualy just bluff but they are dang good bluffers they will charge you and at last second stop and turn
i have had them crawl in the boat with me and have had way too many encounter than i care for .

That is a cotton mouth. I killed one back in 93 that was 5 ft long, if I can find the pic I will post it.
