Years ago I mounted a cottontail rabbit head mount as my first effort.  After a 20 year lapse I started back up and I dove right in with a WT shoulder mount.  It was pretty bad!

Just generally wondering what people did as their first mount....and whether you just grabbed the bull by the horns and did it or if you had help?

Doin' what was expected of me
Kick my shoes off so they can't trace me
 Leave no forwarding address
Before they all drive me crazy
And I leave 'em all in a bloody mess

I took taxidermy at Northwestern High School in Wayne County, Ohio in 1974.  Mr. Penn was our instructor.  We had to mount a bird, fish, and an animal to get an "A".  I mounted a pigeon, a small largemouth bass and a squirrel.  I found the picture of my pigeon from 1974.

Another bird mount from 1975

I won't touch a bird today.  Although I have done birds and big game in the past 34 years...I really like doing fish and reptiles today.  :)

My first mount was a raccoon head. I think I used one of those kits. I quickly realized they weren't 'one size fits all'.

A mink.  My boss told me how to cut the form apart and put it back together, but other than that, it was just me.
