I have used WASCO's Dry Preservative for Y-E-A-R-S but apparently after McKenzies took over they have changed it.  :-\  It used to be a nice granular makeup about the consistancy of salt but now it is more like powdered borax. I HATE it .....this new stuff clumps up and leaves residue everywhere when the original stuff didn't do either.

Does anyone know where to buy a more "salt" like preservative ?

THANKS.

Try Bess-Made preserve from touchstone. Its not granular like salt, but you will like it. It wont clump-up.

Absolutely on the Bess Maid.  I tried them all at one time or another and Bess Maid is the very best.  It won't clot up or dust up like most of the others.

M.T. many of the bird guys swear by plain borax, but I just don't buy into that.  Borax alone offers nothing but insect repelling qualities.  Conversely, DP contains fine powdered borax and has unscented talcum that speeds drying and alum which acts as an astringent. Many have naphtha flakes (moth crystals) which penetrate the hide and continue to act as a repellant. It may matter in the long run but I sure feel better about having taken all the precautions I could have.

George, I totally understand what you are saying. However, I believe a skin, whether it is a bird, fish, or mammal, will not rot when dried. Therefor, a bugproofer is really all you need. I did an experiment one time about 20 years ago on a deerhead. I used just borax. I till have that deer and it looks fine. I've got fishmounts that all I had done is soak them in gas for an hour, it works great. I believe bessmade is great stuff though.
