I have a Rancher gentelman wanting to bring in an old steer hide he had "home-tanned" 20 years ago. All he remembers is that the TANNING CREAM smelled a lot like KEROSCENE. The hide is as he says stiffer than a barndoor.

Please advise how it can best be re-tanned.  I hand shave and have a 4 foot tumbler.  Thanks in advance.

I think you need to oil it and break it, should not need to be retanned, Be careful something that old may fall apart
