I buried a blackbuck antelope skull for a few months. The bugs did a great job, nothing left. I soaked it in bleach for a day and rinsed it. My question is, do I need to do anything else in regards to preserving, etc. I have read a few posts about removing the horns, cleaning out the inside and replacing them. Do I need to do this? I welcome any advice. Also, I have some large bones that have a bit of grease and cartilage on them. What is the best way to solve this without boiling. (They are too large(ostrich) to fit in any pot I've ever seen)Thank you !
I've never done a blackbuck skull before, but on all horned skull that I have done, I remove the horns and clean the cores. if you haven't done this, they are full of lots of nasty stuff, and could separate or cause an odor problem later.
For your big bones--you might try a car wash, the pressure along with the soap(and warm water if you are lucky), might just be what you need.regardless, it wont cost more than a dollar to try.
Good Luck

Use our Super Solvent (2 fl. ozs. per each 1 Gl. of Water used) to remove unwanted grease from any bones befoe bleaching. This is a great grease eating product - so good that the New Bedford Whaling Museum bought Drums of it to degrease the bones of a 65' Whale that they plan to reassemble and hang from their cieling. By removing the grease - you remove any potential for the grease to oxidize and discolor the skull in the future. You can get Super Solvent directly from Rittels or our Distributors.
