Preserving a fox tail

Submitted by Tim Osburn on 6/19/00. ( blues41@sound.net ) 209.153.80.13

I cut the tail off a fresh road kill fox to hang on my antenna. What is the proper method of preserving this? How to Debone it? What if too much time has elapsed
and it's stiff now? Thanks!

split it down the tail 5 or 6 inches so you can get a good grip on it, then squeeze it between 2 sticks(screwdrivers, pencils, dowels, etc,) then pull, and the rest of the bone should just slide out. if it IS dry already, just pull out what you can,or cut further down the tail. you should tan this tail, and you do need to realize that it's not gonna last forever on an antenna.use a liquid tanning oil, and rub it all over. make sure it's totally saturated. after a day or two, check to make sure that the hair isn't loose(you're ok as long as it doesn't pull out in clumps) if it's loose, then wait until it sets. once set, wash the tail, then you're done.

good Luck
